RTX 3070 Price - are they really worth it?

If something is double MSRP then it's never worth it. That rule can be applied to anything, not just a GPU.

But what is MSRP other than some value set by the manufacturer? For many goods MSRP varies significantly for different parts of the world for the exact same product. And, if for your jeans reference, the manufacturer suddenly decides to double the MRSP, does that change the perception of good value and make it worth more than it was before?

Ultimately MSRP means very little, it’s all about the relative value to the individual making the purchase.

900 quid ain't worth it.
But I think OCKs are doing the right thing in matching resale pricing. If they can keep inventory they will at least price out resellers allowing people who NEED a card a place to get one with customer support. Further they will supress resale value which should feed back to their own pricing.
If they were to sell nearer to the original MRSP then I suspect it would encourage resellers to hedge that they can buy up the stock create a shortage and scalp away.
As for who gets the mark up between what a some one will pay for a card an how much the card cost the seller I rather it was a business (suck as OCKs then a chancing individual). Since i want the business to be in business next year, to be in competition with other businesses next year, to be paying its tax and employing its staff and so on. so if OCKs where to have a good margin on these card I can live with that (in the current market). I suspect with sales of GPUs down sales of other components for builds are suppressed.

I was just about ok with £469 for mine.

i wouldnt mind paying that for one. i just hope in the near future they come back down but i cant see it for a long time myself.

retailers will milk the demand as long as they can and get the most they can

I paid around £200 new on release for a 970 gigabyte card.

1070 went up in price

So did the 2070

Then the 3070

Even if all the madness and ridiculous pricing never happened they would be going up in price every generation, they were overpriced even at MSRP on launch but now it's beyond insane

I wasn't happy with MSRP pricing but today's pricing is comical and I've stepped out of pc gaming along with many others and gone console, I refuse to be involved in what is essentially a long term tactic to rip customers off just to play ports of games that are primarily developed for console anyway

Well said

Barely worth the fe rrp at this stage. Certainly wouldn't want to be paying any more than that now.Let the miners/scalpers etc buy them all and forget gaming for a while. Nothing interesting happening until the end of the year anyway.

I paid £600 with the special MM deal from OcUK and I upgraded from 1070Ti and the upgrade is huge. Considering the current market situation £600 is probably a good deal but £900 is way too expensive for what you get.

Is there still a special section for gpu deals/coupons for 50+ forum posters?

I don't think they are. At least most people aren't willing to pay that. They're now being sold for around £850 on auction sites which means that the market is not at lucrative for scalpers anymore.
Just two weeks ago they were being listed at £1100+

The masses are pretty slow to react to situations but I think the hysteria is slowly being replaced by anger. The more angry people get the more likely they are to simply refuse to buy at inflated prices.

I really need a graphics card but I have become angry now at this situation and the way the various companies and scalpers are behaving. The likes of NVIDIA could have done a lot more to ease this situation, and instead they have done pretty much nothing. If OCUK can make an effort then NVIDIA could have done a lot more.

If it wasn't for mods and pads/controllers I'd have done the same thing already. Modern consoles are adequate for gaming and offer far better value for money. But I'd miss the option of modding games and at my age I'm no longer physically capable of overcoming the health problems inherent to pads/controllers. I'm not sure what I'll do in the future. It seems that PC gaming has priced itself out of my range, but console gaming isn't a viable option for me unless the choice of input devices widens and is fully supported by games.

However...without the vast profit margins available on PC gaming hardware, would development of gaming console hardware be anywhere near as fast? Without PC gaming, would consoles now be at maybe PS2 level of performance? What else might drive hardware performance anywhere near as hard?

I think you are right. The people paying that are people who don't know what they are buying or are hysterical or just want the cards for bling value. The average gamer is not stupid and is not going to pay these prices. If NVIDIA insist on ripping us off in the future then I think people will just lower their expectations. They will buy a XX60 instead of an XX70. NVIDIA can dream but I don't think people will just up the amount they are prepared to spend. There is a large body of very angry gamers right now and sooner or later there is going to be a backlash as they look for people to blame.

The trouble with that is prices keep going up so you may think I'll just get the XX60 card instead but you'll still end up paying the same price as the XX70 from the previous generation.

I was worried about the pad for FPS but took the plunge regardless because I was so sick of increasing prices, I needn't have worried, it took some getting used to but now it's fine, in fact in a lot of ways it's better. I use a mouse all day for work and now my wrist gets a rest and the pain in my wrist has all but disappeared. You can match speed with walking NPC's rather than having to stop start all the time. A trigger is great for firing a gun. Vibration adds to the experience.

There are numerous other advantages to gaming on an Xbox but I won't go into detail here, the biggest advantage by far though is the price
