Russian SU-24 - Shot Down by Turkey

The apparently rescued pilot seems to be claiming they had no warnings and were downed by AA (cannon or similar not missile) fire from the ground.

I heard the interview (translated) and there was nothing about ground fire downing the SU-24? Ground fire was claimed to be responsible for making one of the rescue helicopters land, though. Possible those two have been mixed up?

To be fair, I'm sure he was well briefed about what to say. He's hardly going to come out with "yeah, lol, we knew we were pushing our luck..." :)

As it was an F16 and the inventory of turkey.. then it's likely to be with an AIM-9 sidewinder (mach 2.7, IR seeker), sparrow (about mach 2.5 act radar) or a AIM-120 which is mach 4 and an active radar.

On a light plane like the F16 I'd heavily suspect it would have been a sidewinder given the normal configuration of having sidewinders on the tips of the wings.

So given a 2000 mph missile, with a 3-4 second launch time.. that leave say 8 seconds of terminal speed at 2000mph.. or 0.5 miles/sec gives about 4 mile intercept range.

SU-24's max speed is 817mph, or 0.2269444445 miles/sec, so it took the SU-24 eight seconds to go 2 miles at top speed (this assumes that the missile hit within turkish airspace - otherwise this would be turkey shooting down a plane outside it's airspace).

Apparently turkey breaches Greek airspace 40 times a day. Double standards?

This is also what Turkey said in 2012 when Syria shot down one of their planes for entering its airspace:

At the time, then-Prime Minister Erdogan told the Turkish parliament that a short incursion into another nation’s airspace cannot justify an attack on it.

NATO condemned Syria as well, talking of double standards.

Turkey are probably just butthurt that Russia are bombing the ISIS oil convoys and they'll now have to pay the going rate whilst finding another way to fund terrorism.

Possibly, was going off the brief news when the story that one of the pilots had been rescued was breaking. Haven't seen the actual interview.

When I went to Crete they had fighters up constantly

ignore the trolls,

I really hope from the bottom of my heart and soul the Russkies teach a huge lesson to the Turks. Turkey is the regional de-stabilizer, especially now that the neo-ottoman Erdogan rules the country, almost Dictatorial.

Considering that Erdogan is Putin-lite, your argument is hilarious. Furthermore, no one will teach the Turks anything, particulary no Russians as Turkey is part of a military alliance with a strength about 100 times greater than the most powerful competitor.. At worst, they will get scolded in secret by the Americans.
