RX 480 on 100% load all the time?

Does anyone know how to consistently reproduce this issue?

.

Use one or better two rx480 in a ATX Tower in an non climated enviroment. All settings must be default, dont touch wattmann !!! The Card(s) need to reach 80 Degree Celsius. For that i run 3DMark free version Time Spy Test + Demo. Happens 99,9% with my rig doing this on warm summer days, until i set the temp target and fan curve manually.
There must be some magic things happen at 80 degrees as i also get crashes of 3D Mark if all is set to default and the cards reach this target. That makes me wondering cause i suppose still 90 degrees should be no problem normaly?? The second funny thing. As long as i use default settings in wattman it could also happen time spy crashes at ~60 or 70 degrees, the benchmark window just closes and iam scored 0 points. Switching back to the manual settings and all is fine again *Confused*

i add the settings that solve the "problem" for me.

I'm sorry, but I've not been able to consistently reproduce it - it just seems random. One thing - sometimes the AMD Radeon Settings crashes and restarting it will also cause a 100% load on reloading of the programme
Please let me know if it happens without Steam running. We are aware of an issue with SteamVR causing 100% GPU load, we hope to have a fix for that one soon.

It certainly happens without steam running - I hardly ever run steam, and haven't for at least a couple of weeks, and it's still happening.

Thank you for looking into it :)

I've just had the same issue crop up, but it went away after I updated to 16.8.2 through Radeon Settings. I had only just booted up and didn't have any of the named programs running at the time.

I wonder if it is heat related as has been suggested above. I have an AIB card that turns the fans off at idle and my idle temp has been unusually high today because of the heatwave we're having.

If this issue happens again, bring up Task Manager and look for a process called icchs.exe and end it. It's a windows update scheduler, let me know if that drops GPU usage back to 0%.

I didnt have this issue on installing my 480, then i installed TriXX and checked the 'Disable ULPS' box.. then i had this issue.. unchecked the ULPS box and rebooted (which you have to do with this option right?) and havnt had it since.. is this maybe related to the 100% load?

Just a thought.

I have this issue. It will only show itself on startup. Sometimes i'll get hit with it, sometimes i won't. I tried rebooting a few times to reproduce the 100% load, when i got it i looked in the task manager for icchs but couldn't see it. Also, sometimes on boot up the fans on the GPU will whir up to 100% speed, sometimes they won't and it doesn't always occur at the same time as getting the 100% load bug. Also i've noticed that shutting down the system for a minute instead of simply rebooting can help get rid of the bug, whether this is a co-incidence or not i don't know.

I have exactly the same as Burr describes - it only happens on startup. I have not had the fan issue though.

The Windows update scheduler sounds about right, I did get a notification telling me I would need to restart to install updates. Thanks for the tip AMDMatt.

I just wanted to add for reference that when I updated the Radeon drivers, my anti-virus went nuts and blocked the Vulkan runtime installer. I understand that it's very unlikely to be a genuine virus but it suggests something the installer is doing is has changed because it's never done this before. Looking at the logs it seems the thing the AV didn't like was that the installer tried to open a CMD window.

Happened again earlier @AMDMatt.. was when i was changing refresh rates and my display orders (4 monitors though 2 from Intel iGPU).

Running just 1 monitor from the 480 now to see if its a multiple monitor issue but i noticed the 480 is utilised with temps in the 40's while watching live Twitch even though hardware acceleration is disabled in Chrome. Viewing Twitch from monitors using Intel iGPU and the 480 is left alone running idle with 28c temps.

Hope you guys find out the issue here.

ok - just brought the pc out of sleep mode and I've got 100% usage again. Looked in task manager but I don't have icchs.exe running. For me it mostly seems to happen when coming out of sleep mode. I didn't have Steam, GPU-Z running nor do I have raptr installed :)

maybe disable sleep mode? Just turn off the display.

I am constantly stuck in 100% now, even after reboots. It may be how win 10 works when you shutdown as it's similar to hibernate. Only way I can get round it is to reinstall the drivers.!

I've also noticed cs:go reboots the PC about 25% of the time. Not in the game just trying to get to the valve splash screen.

You shouldn't have to do that though?

I know, but, if disabling sleep mode stops it happening then seems like a pretty simple thing to do but until the issue is resolved.

And the second thing is if he disables sleep mode and the problem doesn't happen again then it helps Matt with the troubleshooting the issue.

Mine had nothing to do with sleep mode (was never enabled in the first place). Often at startup and sometimes just randomly out of the blue it would spike to 100% and would not go back down. Restarting usually fixed it but occasionally I would have to power down. I haven't had the issue since upgrading to 16.8.2 but I've probably just been lucky.

Ok so turned the pc on about 25 minutes ago this morning. Just checked wattman after 25 mins and we're at 100% load. Hasn't entered sleep mode or any screen savers. I've just been looking at Facebook. Steam and GPU-Z not loaded, nor have I loaded them this morning and I don't have raptr installed, and there's no icchs.exe

I've taken screenshots of taskmanger if you need them.

I have same problem gpu at 100%
So I did what people have been trying but still @100% then I noticed that when my browser was open Google or Edge gpu went right up 100% so when I minimise browsers gpu load went back to 300mhz so must be something to do with browsers
