Yes, but a 1080 is a better mining card so it still doesn't make sense.
We talked to NVIDIA about this and they said it’s because the Ethereum base code fits the GDDR5 latency characteristics better than GDDR5X.
Actually it isn't - apparently the GTX1070 is considered better due to the GDDR5 it uses,and this is from a recent article on Legitreviews:
But the 1080 is better at non memory based algos. In terms of overall cost/performance they are pretty even at the moment, but they will be mining different coins.
The 1080 is a little more flexible. If eth/ect or zec become unprofitable the 1080s raw power will put it ahead of the 1070.
