Ryan's Headphone Review Thread

A Mixamp is an amp that has Dolby Headphone built in. It pairs well with those spacious analytical headphones giving you a huge soundscape.
If you want the absolute best for competitive play the K701 is your headphone. In stereo they sound similar to the 702 but the 701 has an endless soundstage. In general dry, bright headphones go well with the mixamp and make the best gaming headphones.

Ah right thanks very much, which Mixamp did you use in your review then? As I'd like to get the same, as what you described in your review regarding the 702's is exactly what I'm after :D

So Ive spent another 2 months researching headphones, still feel a Q701/K702 is for me :( Now why cant I find one of these buggers for sale?! :D

It was interesting to read your opinions on the K612 Pro vs the Q701s, actually - could you expand on that a bit more?

I feel that the K612 is more balanced, it's actually one of the most balanced headphones I've heard. It's warmer, more linear and I find it suitable for more applications. The Q701 is not a warm headphone. It's just not designed to be and even out of tube amps with very warm tubes they are still not what I'd call warm. They are wonderfully detailed and quite smooth in comparison to the K701/K702 with a tiny bit more body bringing the bass just under neutral.

The 612 has more body and bass and it's more enjoyable with faster recordings. I like the 612 and Q701 equally in the mids, they are a different flavour in that section but about equal. The Q images a bit better and has a bigger soundstage but in Dolby Headphone the 612 does expand well.

Treble is more extended on the Q and it's also smoother while the K612 is less extended but more grainy. I'd pick the Q701 for games and K612 for music personally.

The K702 has even less body than the Qs but only a tad and is more dryer, treble happy and colder. The K702 for gaming over both.

Rids believe me it will be lol

Yeah the D7000 is a good headphone but it's awfully overpriced. Very fun, warm and quite balanced. It's got excellent bass impact, not much in the mids to satisfy me though but other than that it's up there with the top closed hifi phones.

Good luck finding a pair that's good condition and at a reasonable price though! The cheaper Denon D7100 may be to your liking.

The mids on these headphones is out of this world. I paid £90 for these things. Vocals sing with such beauty.

My vocal kings are

HD650
Annie's
LCD2
Mad Dog 3.0 and 3.1

These sound ridiculous! Just so effortless. The style is on the lighter side unlike the heavy weighty HD650 but the mids are so deep and warm and precise. Right now listening to some warm and emotional vocals and these encourage and perform them amazingly well.

When's HD650s arrive I think they face some tough competition.

I wonder why they discontinued them?

Sennheiser seem to have the right idea, once you have something that works really well, like the 600 series, you just keep making them :D

Great guide. Surely this should be stickied?

Just seen this after posting a separate thread. I was hoping for some advice, I'm currently using Razer Tiamat 7.1 headphones and not really liking them all that much. I guess I want it all from a set of headphones, where I can hear all the detail in music, bass that makes the cats hair stand up but I also want to soil my pants in Alien Isolation and know where the enemy is in BF4.

As far as I can see, none of your recommendations have surround sound (or virtual). So I was leaning towards the Corsair Dolby 7.1. But I don't want to end up with another naff pair of headphones. Is going for stereo instead of surround that big a deal for online FPS?

I don't want to have have an external amp or anything like that... just plug into my X-Fi Fatal1ty. What would you recommend for around the £120-£170 range.

I appreciate the compliments, thank you.

I'm happy to low the guide helps and I'll hopefully be adding way more content soon! It's just finding the time. For your price range I recommend going on the bay and picking up some Sony MA900 then using an amp that has Dolby Headphone.

It's the sound card that provides the virtual surround sound not the headphones so any pair of stereo headphones will work.

Good choices are: AKG K612, AKG Q701 (uncomfortable headband), AKG K702...

Don't know if I already mentioned, but found your guide very helpful.
So thanks a lot, as generally helped me grasping an understanding in some more headphones.

Ryan, I know you've shuffled the pads around on the Q701 and K712.

Do you think it would be worth me getting the gel pads from Thomann for my K702s?

I believe they are the same pads as used on the K712.

My K702s already have the port sticky pads removed so the gel pads could turn them into something of a bass monster but I have the pads stored safely, so I can always put them back on if needs be.

At £75 for the two pads it's not exactly a cheap experiment, which is why I haven't done it before :D

I would say if you want that more lush sound it would be worth doing. You seem to love your HD650's so I can't see it being a negative. The K712 foams are a bit more dense feeling as well and it seems to give a more fuller low end so if you can get the foams that specifically come with the current 712 they would help.

If you use your 702's for gaming I'd leave them as close I stock as possible though.
