If the 7800x3d is expected to come in around £450/500 with the risk of very limited supplies - why aren't more people snapping up the 7900x3d for slightly more while it has a healthy amount of supply? I understand the value proposition isn't quite as good but the 7900x3d is still a very good CPU right? It's just placed between two better propositions in terms of price and/or performance?

probably because each ccd is 6 cores and having to use 6 cached cores for gaming

current little discount tipped me over the edge and i have a 7900x3d for my new build. Building this weeknd

Am I correct you can't overclock just tinker with profiles? Any guides or insight as to what to play with? Cheers

Built mine yesterday. So far it’s a great CPU and a good upgrade for me from the 5800X3D - I needed more cores but not to the tune of the 7950X3D.
So am I right in saying that the 7900X3D is 12 cores, but in games it will utilize cores assigned with X3DVcache? So CCD 0 6 cores X3DVcache. CCD 1 6 standard cores?

Any chance of being able to run a benchmark in BF2042? :D

Yes, 6 cores 0-5 with the vcache. BF2042, I can but I can’t do it right away - machine is in use for work related stuff. Will run as soon as I can.

it be limited in supplies for a while due to demand is crazy high.
7900x3d is a superb cpu

was just about to post this exactly.

Think i'll grab a 7900X and forget the 7800X

Hmm, the 7900 could be the more sensible option depending on stock.
And price. It was partly due to the price decrease that I went for it. It’s now, in my eye, significantly cheaper than the 7950X3D and I suspect not that far away from the 7800X3D.

It is a compromise chip. must have the 6 ccd cpus out there are. But it’s not just a one ccd. It’s two and I’ve seen, during the very limited gaming I’ve been able to do, games are on the cache cores with windows and other apps on the none cache. For me, that is ideal.

Now for me Palo VMs, 12 cores is more than enough.

Agree. I was lucky enough to pick it up cheaper than £590.

If the 7950X3D wasn’t at £750, I would have gone with it regardless of ‘needing’ all those cores or not.

Which brings me back to 7900 - I said it above, it is a comprise but it is quite a bit cheaper.

It all depends on use case and if the 7800 will beat it by a significant margin or not. Time will tell.

Didn't GamersNexus review the 7900X3D and basically said, no?
That was before the price change though to be fair.

EDIT: Here it is and yeah, in conclusion they said that it doesn't make sense for the (original) price

Ah yeah I had kind of forgot how the chips differ in regards to CCD - so effectively you get more cores running but at a slower speed on the 7800 - so any cpu-limited games should in theory perform better on the 7800 than the 7900?

Now I think of it that matches up to people 'simulating' benchmarks of the 7800X3D by just disabling one CCD on the 7950X3D.

I don’t know if the 7800 will be quicker or not. I suspect it will be and probably quicker than the 7950. Until reviews, real not simulated, we don’t know.

What I would say is and this is just my opinion/thought train, if gaming only wait it out. If doing light production, the 7900 is a valid option. If you are doing lots of production and have the money to burn the 7950 it is.

Right now, I don’t know if I’ve gone the right direction for purely gaming. What I do know is, given the price reduction (and I had gift card at the place I purchased from) the 7900 looked right me.
