Are you sure, have you tested this? would I not need an AM3 backplate?
You are right you will still need an AM3 backplate so either way you will have to get a bracket. With the Kraken you will need to request a top bracket for the AM4 slot but for the AM3 bracket you can get one for cheap usually off ebay.
No they are the same but the bracket that comes with Crosshair motherboard is an AM4 bracket meaning the backplate is too small for the AM3/AM3+ cooler.
So to use the kraken you will need an AM3 backplate or an AM4 top mounting kit if that makes sense.
You can claim an AM4 mounting bracket from NZXT website now but I think it will be a couple of weeks to arrive.
A stop gap is any cooler that will fit on the AMD clip mounting such as an FX AM3 stock cooler.
NZXT say they will ship on the 15th so will just have to wait i guess

What about folks who already have an original corsair aio that they bought on MM or s/h and have no proof of ownership? Can they claim the appropriate free AM4 mounting hardware or will they have to/ be able to purchase these items from, say, ocuk when available?

The only board that I know of that has AM3 holes aswell as AM4 holes is the Crosshair hero. The rest of what I have seen have AM4 ones only.

Most if not all will work with the Crosshair aslong as you have a AM3 backplate (sold separately)I am a little confused is there any all in one water coolers on OC that I can buy that will work out of the box on Asus Crosshair

Just need to cancel the Gigabyte board and get the Asus now

From what I am reading and seeing, the answer is no.... so I have ordered one. I have a NZXT Kraken X62 and backplate arriving tomorrow, will post pics here, my H110i GT has a AM3 mount but AM3 back plate was never included in packaging.
Oh bugger, I don't think I'm going to get my h80i to fit so I'm looking for something that I can fit on to the asus crosshair without to much fuss
