It's difficult to predict exactly what's going on at the club.
Its a mess from top to bottom actually which is very sad to see.
Woodward doesn't appear to have the ***** to sack LvG, as a purely business / financial man he may be 2nd to none with the sponsorships etc but that's not how football clubs need to be run. If he wants the Financial Directors position back (or whatever he had previously) fair enough - but he isn't the right person for being the top man.
For starters, I think you can lay the majority of the blame at LvG's door (and Woodward now too). He's had free reign of pretty much everything, training ground arrangements, squad signings, tactics, the lot. He's experienced and was able to bring in any staff he wanted, so can't use that as an excuse. He's had a perfectly fair crack the job in every sense. He was provided with the materials to mount a title challenge and play good football, no question..
Without doubt. More than enough time, definitely more than enough money , between those two they have made a mockery of the Football Club.
I think our current squad is mostly a mixed bag of potential, and players who are past it. The few players in their prime are doing a generally poor job on the pitch. This can in some way be attributed the poor coaching and tactical side of things, but not entirely. I think if we aim to change 3-4 players every transfer window, within 2 seasons we can have a very capable squad, based on what we're prepared to spend (a lot, and the money train shows no signs of stopping).
1/2 a dozen promising kids, 3 or 4 more good potential (Smalling, Darmian, Lingard, ) two probable stars of the future (Shaw and Martial) and one absolute gem (De Gea)
A lot of the squad apart from the above are reasonable squad players or hangers on (Fellaini, Young, Jones...rojo....are the worst culprits)
However I would still say Utd need AT LEAST 1/2 dozen players in the summer to even think about chasing for title, or even top 4 if its another season like this one, who ever comes in (which of course means give or take a dozen high profile deals coming in and going out) which is a tough ask otherwise with Pep coming in across town, Utd will sink further away from City and there is potential for Chelsea to get back above us (with probably a better all round squad than Utd already, let alone who they will get in the summer)
It's silly to say that we're simply going to struggle forever from now on, that's not particularly likely. Money wins out in the end. But it's fair to say there have been numerous poor decisions since SAF left, and even a bit before then. It now seems we're looking to hire a manager who is one of the absolute best, and a sporting director of some sort to help fix recruitment issues. Those two things are a step in the right direction.
a lot of bad decisions have happened (some forced on the club like Gill and SAF leaving simultaneously) others not so - but Utd have become a bit of a laughing stock and its painful to watch.
I'm not sure about a sporting director position - but as our recruitment has been a little bit slap dash in the last three years I guess its time to try this role.
Sacking LvG won't suddenly fix things, but it might fix some things, even if we put someone like Warren Joyce in charge. A new approach. If Woodward is standing by him due to personal feelings only, then he's insane and should be sacked as well. There is absolutely no sign of things getting better, at best we'll win the odd game by limping over the finish line.
As for Mourinho, I see him as the main realistic option. It's obvious he wants the job and is pushing us (via the press) to offer it to him, even if it's just a pre-contract for the summer. This really has to happen.
.
Warren Joyce until the summer wouldn't be a bad shout actually but anything at this point HAS to be better (as it cant possibly get worse)
