I don't believe for one moment that the only reason they haven't dumped LvG is down to £12.5m compo they'd have to pay.
If they wanted to get rid of him they would just do it, that amount of money is nothing to Man.U.
It's not even half a Fellaini.

They probably just don't think anybody else can do any better without spending big on a few more players during the summer, so why pay to get rid of him now and have Giggs or the new manager take the flak for a poor end to the season? Mourinho probably won't want to take over until the summer anyway.

Benitez to Newcastle looks a goer.

Rory Smith, a journo for the Times who is very close to Benitez, has tweeted the following:

Rafa Benitez spent this evening at home watching the Chelsea game. He's not been offered Newcastle formally. Yet.

There have been talks for a couple of days between Rafa and Newcastle, and a degree of progress. But nothing finalised.

The 'formally' and 'yet' in the first tweet makes me think it's all but done.

Foolishly I already have my hopes up. This would/could be huge. Not guaranteed safety of course but definitely the push that the squad could do with. Why this wasn't attempted during the 2 week break is beyond me, though.

Our first potentially decent (I say decent as it is only to keep us up) under Ashley. Love Rafa.

Completely different circumstances of course, but we he even picking the team at Real? :D

I fear this appointment is a little too late but I'll be damned if it doesn't excite me, even if we do still go down.

No disrespect to Newcastle but surely Rafa could get a better job than them in their current situation?! Not sure how many relegation battles he's been involved in.

Would imagine this is an interim till the end of the season, if they went down he'd be off and might stay on if he keeps them up but I'd imagine only with some firm say on transfers and running the team.

He wants to be in England. His family never left Liverpool when he lost the Liverpool job and has always wanted to move back. He was all but the West Ham manager at the start of the season had Real not came calling. And it needed to be Real to stop him too.

That's a very strange appointment if it's true.
He has no idea or experience on how to keep a team in the PL and the same when it comes to getting a Championship side promoted.

What does he care, he's making more money being fired than being a manager... being a well regarded manager who keeps getting fired is making Rafa an insanely rich man at the moment.

He was sacked from 1 of his last 3 jobs and that was Real who sack everybody.

Sacked by Liverpool, sacked by Inter, wasn't a permanent job at Chelsea though he managed to not improve on RDM league points per game for the rest of the season. He resigned at Napoli because Real for no sensible reason identified him as their next manager, he would have been sacked for taking the team who finished 2nd the year before he took over to outside the CL spots. He was then sacked by Real after producing dismal football.

He got the sack from 3 of his past 5 teams avoided the sack at the 4th thanks to Perez being a nutjob and really didn't do anything special at Chelsea. RDM got fired with the same league record and winning the champions league so chances are having not improved them in the league and 'only' winning the europa league he'd have been fired there as well.

I'm not questioning him for (apparently) taking the job, I'm questioning whether he's the right choice by the Newcastle board.
But then again they're not particularly well known for good choices.

As ridiculed as Moyes is, I think he's a far better bet than Rafa

That's exactly what I was thinking.
He won't play glamorous football, but that's not what Newcastle need.
They need a battler and Moyes will definitely try and make Newcastle difficult to beat.
Moyes won't win you a league title, but given time, will keep the team in the upper half of the table, for a sustained period.
Has Benitez ever managed a team through a relegation battle?
