Salman Rushdie attacked

Extreme forms of Islam are vile, cruel and disgusting but so is an extremist interpretation of Christianity for instance. Unfortunately there is intolerance almost everywhere where many people live under authoritarian states which are deeply regressive. We are lucky to live in a free country under enlightenment values, it's a very rare and precious thing which should be preserved and built upon.

Extreme forms of Islam are, of course, just people following Islam. Most forms of Islam for instance consider death to be the appropriate punishment for blasphemy.

So your google fu managed to drag up one person, possibly. And your comparing that to Islam? /golfclap

lol

There was a guy the other day got killed by armed forces because of the Trump raid for gods sake. What is wrong with you people?

The armed man killed after attacking an FBI office on Thursday appears to have been a Donald Trump supporter enraged about the federal raid on Mar-a-Lago who documented his attack as it happened on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.

The man may also have been present at the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.
Donald Trump

When the FBI executed a search warrant on Trump’s Florida property on Monday, reportedly in search of classified White House documents, Trump told supporters his house was “under siege, raided, and occupied”, leading some extreme Trump supporters online to speak of civil war.

Three days later, Ricky Shiffer, 42, attacked an FBI office in Cincinnati with an AR-15-style rifle and a nailgun. After his attempt to break into the building was unsuccessful, he fled to a rural area, where police shot and killed him during an armed standoff.

The west are having people kill others because of Trump for god sake
Whose the one comparing Islamic terrorists to Trump? You've got 1 death (his own) and a very tenuous link to another
Wheres that goalpost moving gif?
Having a bit of a mare here aren't you

Not me. Im not the deluded one here. I accept there are both crazy muslims and crazy Trump supporters trying to kill innocent people often.

Investigators are looking into whether Shiffer had ties to extremist groups such as the Proud Boys, law enforcement officials told the New York Times.

The far right has reacted with fury to the raid on Mar-a-Lago, with diehard Trump supporters framing the FBI operation as an act of authoritarianism and some vowing retribution. The federal judge who approved the warrant, Bruce Reinhart, has been subject to death threats.

“This is the piece of **** judge who approved FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago,” a user wrote on a pro-Trump message board, Vice has reported. “I see a rope around his neck.” Another person wrote, “Let’s find out if he has children....where they go to school, where they live...EVERYTHING.”

Political violence has become “almost a 365-day phenomenon”, the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, said during a Senate hearing last week. “I feel like every day I’m getting briefed on somebody throwing a molotov cocktail at someone for some issue.”

This is what extemist do.

Yet only one guy did anything, and the result was that he got shot?

Nobody should be killing anyone in the name of a cause.

When we think of a free society then we have to think of the person whose views we don't like the most being allowed to say them. If we don't then we're on the same road this guy was on.

The above is true.

This only exists in your own head.

Given your enthusiastic support for brutal punishment of those that indulge in minor acts of rebellion (such as taking drugs) I wonder where you actually stand on the issue at hand.

I am unsure just what you are asking me here? What punishment would I like to see for attempted murder? What's my opinion of Rushdie? (I think I covered that briefly in a previous post).

Whilst I think far harsher punishments for drug users would be useful, my call for the most Draconian action would be against drug *dealers*, but let's not drag this thread over there.

Again with the exaggeration, you've got one verifiable death in the 7 odd years since trump came into focus, if this is often in your world I dread to think what you make of something that seems to happen every few months.

Unfortunately extremists dont think like that.

Which one ends up with more blood on its hands though? There is no belief more dangerous in the world than Islam based upon body count.
I believe extremist Christianity is currently held back as most adherents with any wealth and power live in democratic countries (I want to keep it that way, I know they are recently trying their best to undo progress, see the USA).

However, obviously Islamic fundamentalism is causing many more problems now. Over the course of history backwards values and religious fundamentalism of all kinds have caused much bloodshed, Christianity included.

There was a time where the Arab world was rather more advanced than the Western one. For instance the scientist Ibn Al-Haytham was the father of optics. We use Hindu-Arabic numerals in mathematics in the West for a reason and the Islamic/Arab world were the pioneers of algebra. Also, religious freedom was protected and the Islamic world was relatively liberal and tolerant in the Ottoman Empire (at least in the early/mid period). I am not saying it was good by modern standards, I am talking relatively.

I deplore intolerance and backwards values of all kinds wherever they come from, I do not have a romantic view of the past and want us to always strive to improve and go forth in a positive direction which is why I am a progressive.

I hope Salman recovers quickly, I very much support and admire his principled stance on freedom of expression and I applaud him for his courage.

Is this the "whataboutery" expert fresh through the station turnstile?

Before being barred from the (only certain) Speaker's Corner, "whataboutery" was deemed anathema. ;)
No because I condemn regressive values of all kinds, I am consistent and I am not excusing them.

You’re going to use the phrase “moderate Islam” in a moment and I have some bad news for you. There no moderate Islam, there is no extremist Islam; there is just Islam.
Good people take the good parts of these religious books to heart and bad people take the bad parts. In my experience that's how human psychology works. Have you read the Old Testament?

Ironically Trump supporters are aligned with free speech where as the left are more closely aligned with radical Islam who think "free speech doesn't mean free from consequences"
Trump and his supporters never defend left wing free speech (only their own and those that agree with them while playing the victim) and the conservatives on both sides of the Atlantic seem intent on stripping us of our hard won rights and freedoms.
