Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I wouldnt bother personally, especially one like Darky's. Years i've spent with custom ROM's and now i just use a normal ROM modified to my spec.
Stablity is the thing i need most from a phone. Changing the file system over to Ext4 and removing all the Samsung crap is all the Galaxy S needs.

I need another kernel, JVO still doesn't support Voodoo sound improvements :(

Cool, thanks for that. It'd be great to hear your opinions on the ROM.

I've found it noticeably faster than all other ROMs I've used, it works really well too.
I didn't charge the battery fully before flashing so I don't get brilliant battery life, I need to recalibrate it.
I haven't found any faults with it yet.
I quite like the green glow when you scroll to the end of menus.
The browser is changed a bit, seems a bit quicker.

Not much more to say, all I use my phone for is playing angry birds, calling people and checking email :)

Unbranded UK handsets also have Gingerbread over Kies too (so if you bought SIM free, or if your handset isn't branded/locked).

I'm currently using MIUI. It's all the awesomeness of CM7 with all the eyecandy of iOS. It's quick, customisable and almost everything works. Even FM radio is finally being worked on from what I understand. There can be some minor issues with installing the ROM, but if you follow the instructions it's fine. I'll happily help anyone out.

The only caveat is battery life. I can get about a day and a half to two days, but things should get better with time.

Well had mine for just over a week now, liking it a lot, still need to get more apps and such though :) Had to unlock it, was locked to 3. If I change firmware presumably I have to re-unlock or?

Considering even getting rid of my iPod touch.. not sure about that just yet.

Also thinking about trying out this DarkyROM using ROM Manager, is it even worth it? Pain upgrade is speed or something right?

(Currently on Froyo, my Samsung Kies just doesn't work... at all...)

As hard as it is to resist not going for the new Galaxy S II, for anyone who is looking for a really good deal, there are quite a few availalable now on the original Galaxy S, which still has a very good spec. and also the benefit of loads of customisable ROMs and tweaks etc.

Vodafone offered me a one free on a £30 per month contract on an early renewal. It is not locked, and the only 'branding' was a single 360 app which can easily be removed.

Mine is currently running the latest Gingerbread release, and I am sure there is still a lot more to come yet.

The battery problems which some users are experiencing (on both models) are apparently down to Samsung, and will hopefully be fixed in a future ROM update.

All custom ROM's are faster, use less RAM, have other tweaks etc. They are generally rooted so you can do previously restricted things e.g. adblocking. ROM's are generally themed to improve look.

Went and got this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091

Need to get out widgetlocker and go launcher still to make it look nicer..

Though now it says I'm on T-mobile and not Virgin Media.. problem?

I would suspect that it means Virgin are piggybacking off T-Mobile transmitters and their branded ROM hides that. That would be my first guess. Darky's ROM is a great way to go if you want the benefits of a modded ROM and still Samsung compatibility and decent battery life. I also like cooking ROMs in the kitchen as you have the same performance as Darky's (maybe better) and you can customise it how you like. That said, there aren't many decent Gingerbread bases to choose from, nor many options right now. The Froyo ROM kitchen is still incredibly good.

There aren't many 'ground up' custom ROMs for the Galaxy S though, except maybe CyanogenMod 7. Anyone know of any others? Most seem to be modded Samsung ROMs (Darky's included).

I'm a fan of darkys too, just wish Samsung would fix the super battery drain bug in GB - it's pretty hilarious once it kicks in and drains 25%+ in an hour. Don't worry too much about the Virgin / T-Mo thing, alex is right, it's just the MVMO tag not showing.

I use darkys aswell.

Darkys FB page says he had 7 days (I think it was) out of v10.1 GB

Low usage tho. lol

I think its just Driod OS thats the problem.

Ok thanks guys :) Anything really worthwhile doing now then with a 'modded' ROM? Heard you can OC the phones and such, though with people saying about a battery problem; surely that can't be good!

O2 branded device, updated to Gingerbread through Kies. Having a couple of issued with it.

Using Froyo never had a problem with GPS, always worked perfectly, would lock almost immediately. Now it takes about ten minutes to get a lock when using navigation.

Second issue is battery drain. On Froyo I could get two days use out of the phone before recharging.
Charged the phone last thing last night, went to bed with the phone left on standby, this morning battery was at 48%, minimal usage since then and it's now down to 32%.

Anybody else having similar issues?
I'm wondering if a factory reset might help.

Firstly, GPS. How many times have you tried it? The first lock always takes a long time, after that it should be faster. Also download Fasterfix from the market and change the setting to UK. I can't remember if it needs root.

As for battery, Gingerbread now has a better visualisation of battery usage in the menu. Look at it and see what is using up the battery power. If Android OS is going crazy, restart the phone, it's a known issue. If it's cell standby, you could try flashing a different modem, I've found the JVO modem uses more power than JPY for me, but you need a decent Gingerbread modem, so you could try JVK.

To the guy who wanted to OC - you can lower the volts in an attempt to save battery life, and overclock simultaneously. You'll need a custom kernel that is compatible with UV/OC and an app like Pimp my CPU. I haven't tried it, don't think you'll save much power and it's likely to introduce instability if you're not careful.
