Glad you're all sorted, shame you had to factory restore but at least it works I guess.

A workmate did the ODIN push of the de-odex kies release from 17/5 and it worked fine without issue. Look for the XDA de-odexed official builds thread in i9000 development.

im still using SGS and already updated to Gingerbread 2.3.3 that was avail yesterday from KIES (3 times download cos twice downloading was stop and the third one was completed) and it lots better the too much bugs in Froyo 2.2.1 cos when I using Froyo and has lots of crashing and reset included wiped off software so updated to Gingerbread that was prefect included so smooth, fast boot up loading, new look and support all my software without problems also I noticed my 3G contract was lots faster also Wifi as well - Im glad it all done...

OMG I hate samsung Kies so much :mad:

Plugged in my S todayand it said that there was a firmware upgrade available (yipee! On t-mobile), but every time I go to do it, it says there was an error with backing up and then crashes. So I try without backing up and it STILL crashes out.

What do?

Such a poor delivery (software) from Samsung

For sure when this phone dies wont get Samsung again - HTC i think

Just flash it using Odin simpler and safer then that piece of rubbish that samsung dish out!

Meh, and now the firmware updater crashes every time. Looks like I'll be rooting (although tbh, after a bit of googling, it looks like it could be because I'm using 64bit W7). What's the reccomended root to go for then? I'm completely new to it (although I did jailbreak my iphone) so I don't have a clue what's good and what's not.

Some people have had success with uninstalling Kies, then downloading the latest version from the samsung website and trying again.

Tried that, and uninstalling all the drivers aswell and re-installing them. Still nothing.

Flash with Odin or Hemidall instead then, they're probably safer anyway. Head over to the SGS section on XDA for links/guide and samfirmware should have the appropriate files.

Done the update using Kies yesterday.

Had to do it on my laptop using mobile data streamed via Wi-Fi.

All went well and I successfully rooted the phone using CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS and Odin. SuperOneClick and GingerBreak wouldn't work for me.

Easiest way go xda look darkys or docs rom basically flash a kernel 1 min ,then put rom on sd card at root apply zip.

Really is that simple follow the guide/s you can't go wrong

I used 3G contract and download latest KIES then removed the old KIES version plus delete in the regedit and folder then reboot then install KIES and then plug SGS - prefect update firmware... Im running Win 7 x64 HP SP1 -- it working fine with upate but just the downloading that stopping 3 times but later it prefect loading - and the my phone flashed and rebooting -- it prefect running all way...

Just use Odin sersiouly miles easier and you will be able to get some decent roms
