Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Sorry to post twice in a row but I have done some reading, can anyone confirm if this is correct?

I'm going to have a Orange branded sgs. My intention is to debrand and remove simlock.

Are the steps as follows?
1. Check to see if 3 button download works
2. Download and install Odin and rom of choice
3. Remove simlock via an app on the market (is this permanent? )
4. Profit?

Sim lock is perm although some Orange galaxy S's come unlocked (yes even from Orange) - check first :) If it's from CPW/mobiles.co.uk or the like it will almost 100% chance be unlocked.

So is the whole 3 button download a problem from the factory? If I can get into that mode, then I don't need to worry?

Also, is the gingerbread rom official?

Can a screen be faulty and use to much power.
2h 6m 40s on battery
Display 74% (Set to 10%.)
Voice calls 12%
Cell standby 5%
Droid system 3%
Droid OS 2%
Go SMS Pro 2%
Phone idle 1%

Battery is 88%.

I have calibrated the battery as I have done before.

Not that I know of. I have not downloaded it. Im on Darkys 10.1.

Custom ROM and your wondering why things don't appear right? LOL

put a stock rom on and test it, the tell us your findings. To me it looks perfectly normal.

Mine:
17h 13m 26s on battery
Display 49%
Android OS 21%
Android system 10%
Maps 9%
Cell standby 4%
Phone idle 4%
Voice calls 2%

3 Button is a factory thing, yes. If you can get into this mode you can pretty much do whatever you like to the phone and it will be OK. The reason for this is download mode is almost always the route to a safe recovery even in a failed ROM change.

Rough order I'd use assuming 3 button works:

Optional: Root and backup everything via Titanium backup.
Not Optional: Install Nitrality and backup EFS. Do not forget this, if you totally balls your phone this will be needed.

1) Run simunlock, test with another SIM.
2) find ROM of choice, read instructions a few times
3) choose right version of ODIN (1.3 for 64bit OS, 1.7 else)
4) flash it, might need to flash in 2 stages depending on ROM
5) restore via Titanium. only restore apps.

Brummie - at a guess you're running 2.3.3 and have the battery eater problem currently, Android OS shouldn't run that high, you may need a reboot. The rough rule is if Android OS is running >20% you're currently experiencing the problem.

Clairvoyant - You're looking at %'s of 12% battery use. i) This is only 12%, it's too small to judge ii) the battery will be mostly used by the screen on this phone, the other bits are pretty efficient. Don't worry :)

I use Darky's I must admit as a sorta halfway house between extremely custom roms and the official builds. The main stable versions right now are 9.5 (based of 2.2) and 10.1 (based off 2.3). I use 10.1 but all samsung 2.3.3 based roms have the battery eating bug which is a little annoying but I can sorta live with (a restart a day is usual). 9.5 was more stable but its an android version behind and I like to be a bit more towards the edge of software releases :)

One of the best reasons for Darky being your first custom ROM if you choose this path is the awesome guides they produce. This is the guide for 10.1 for example: http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...-darkyrom-gingerbread-jvh-noob-friendly.3080/

This will hold your hand as you use ClockwerkMod (CWM), ODIN and a ROM flash. Once you have this down you can pretty much install a new ROM within minutes.

ok, so I feel like a right dullard having my phone for a year and still not fixing this problem:

My contacts list shows just people I've stored on my phone, no mess there. However if I go to Messaging>Compose>Contacts I get a massive list of everyone I've ever emailed through gmail :( How can I trim the fat there and just show my actual contacts?

reading this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=17079417 and changing the contacts shown doesn't change anything for me?
