Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I used a multi CSC JPY 2.2 for a few months, worked without issue. From what I know if you flash in the incorrect stages then you'll see things like a corrupted boot screen and small things like that. That's for example why you flash JVH before JVO - JVH will essentially flash a "base" 2.3 image on the phone then you put on the "newer" JVO.

I honestly don't get a lot of it but a workmate flashed on top of a really old ORA 2.1 image to JVH and aside from it mostly working the bootup screen looks like its a dead phone so I sorta believe there is some real reason for multi-stage upgrading unless you use a so-called base image with PIT file et al.

The rule of thumb for upgrading from 2.1/2.2.1 or a custom rom, is to flash stock JVO with odin (to give you correct Gingerbread bootloaders), then if you want a custom JVO rom, you install a suitable Kernal such as CF root or Speedmod and then flash the custom rom from SD card through CWM.

Brilliant no faffing required, it was already on 2.2.1 so I've left it there until the update has been tried and tested.

Much more snappy than my previous phone and so smooth.

One thing though, the stock browser, on this site for example, when you're zoomed in and you scroll, it shows the site scrolled out in the area that was off screen. If that makes any sense (what would be a checker board on an iDevice). Is this fixable by settings?

I have updated to a deodexed XXJVP 2.3.4. Gingerbread.
Speedmod kernal t6
Ext4 Not enabled.
Custom theme from JKays to add configurable Ext Power Menu, 4 lock screens, CRT screen Off and Bat % mod :)

Even without a lagfix, it is just as smooth as the custom JS8 Doc Rom I came from...
Will see how it goes over the next few days, but liking it so far :-)

I'm getting a new Galaxy S on 3 network - anyone know if 3 has pushed out the 2.3 update yet?

I know they have the JPY update, which is probably one of the better ROMs anyway. Can't think of anything you're missing by going to Gingerbread anyway. That said, no real reason to flash a Three ROM when you can flash any one you like with Odin/Hemidall, including custom ROMs. The most complete, stable, and bug-free ROM i've used so far is Android 2.2.1 JS8. JPY modem works well with that too.

Should iplayer work ok on this phone? Its unwatchable for me :(

Same here on mine, however on another Galaxy S hanset here, it works perfectly. Even on the same software, weird eh. The two handsets feel different as well, one is slightly heavier and feels slightly less rattly, as well as having a darker 'chrome' bezel.

thanks - you have to root to flash right? - the phone will be for my cuz so 2.2 JPY should be fine for now.

Does anyone get the weird tearing when scrolling web pages?

It seems to happen when i double tap to zoom in.

Iplayer seems related to flash version. It works slightly better when the update in uninstalled.

Currently on a JVP based rom, so far no drain bug after Three days. Still not convinced at the moment, I guess I'll see over the next few days. Darky's 10.1 was great for me but for some reason the drain bug started after a week or so.

No, rooting is something different entirely. Go to XDA Forums and read all the FAQs you can bear. The alternative is boot up Samsung Kies and let it do the work for you, but the time you put into learning the device should be given back if you figure out how to update to a decent official ROM or custom ROM and customise it to what you really want. There's a lot of cool stuff out there, some things you need to check first as well, but I'm not going to repeat all the info as this thread is chock full of answers and XDA has plenty of guides, so I'd be wasting our time.

When you sync your contacts with facebook, your contacts gain pictures, these show up under contacts, and when the contact is called or a call is received from them.

However, under the sms application the pictures are not showing, I don't want to change to another application to fix this, but I want to fix it in the stock app, any ideas?

Use SyncMyPix and let it change the contact picture saved on google's servers.
