Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Clockwork recovery - I presume it is that, looks exactly the same as it does on my TouchPad with Android. The DOS-like menu before the phone boots where you can wipe the cache, battery stats etc. I will try again - have about four different guides open, think I am just confusing myself lol.

What do you mean all three files? There is only one to download:

GT-I9000_XSA_I9000XWJW6_I9000XSAJV8_I9000XWJW1.zip

which contains

JW6_JV8_JW1.tar

All done. Managed to flash 2.3.4 back on. Is it worth going to ICS? Are the ROMs complete? Or do some features not work?

Thanks anyon :)

Yep I knew it was the recovery but I was surprised your friend managed to install that ok but not the ROM.

I sold my phone before ICS ROMs were released but if cyanogenmod based on gingerbread is anything to go by, it's ok. Some things aren't perfect such as hardware video acceleration.

I'd just give one of the newer samsung uk gingerbread ROMs. It performs really quite well as Samsung have been working on it via incremental updates for a long time.

Thanks anyon.

I found this guide - best course of action?

That guide is for the i900m not the standard Galaxy S.

The ealier ICS releases were fine, not great, but now SlimICS is on my phone I can easily recommend it for anyone with a bit of interest in customising and improving their old phone. It's wonderful. If it's just someone who wants their phone to basic stuff they may as well stick on unbranded normal old 2.3.6

Feature wise everything works on SlimICS though, except video effects which doesn't matter. No reboots or any issues on mine. All very smooth.
You do have to install some of the 'removed apps' though. E.g. GooglePartnerSetup, media uploader.

I've been running Slim Bean 1.0 since Friday, but it has been a little slow at times. I believe this is due to CyanogenMod 10 (or maybe jelly bean itself), which this is based on, no longer being able to use a datadata folder.

I'd heard some alternative kernels could fix this problem, so this afternoon I put the jelly bean version of the semaphore kernel on, and the phone has regained all of its speed and is running very well.

If anyone is thinking of giving it a go, then do because jb has some nice features. I particularly like the way folders on the desktop now work.

The JB build I tried, Semaphore wasn't compatible :(

That's a shame, are there no other kernels that work? It could be worth checking again in a couple weeks, things are moving quickly for the sgs at the moment.

I'm really surprised his much support there still is for this phone, but I guess it shows how good it was when it came out, and still is.

After having one of these for almost 2 years (and servicing 2-3 for family/friends), I can say that the best ROM for me was an AOSP Gingerbread ROM (the name eludes me now, sorry). It was lightning fast, great battery life and everything worked. It wasn't CM7, but was in the same vain but with the Samsung bits like camera and FM Radio included.

SlimICS works well, but is a bit slow. I now recommend simply the last official 2.3.6 firmware for your product code, as they seem so quick compared to ICS. I'm not actually that surprised it never got an official update. By the looks of things, shoehorning 4.1 on it won't result in much joy.
