Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Thanks for those recommends will have a look at them i thought about keeping stock but i do like to personalise my phone although this will be my first android phone and i expect it is a big stepup from winmo 6 lol. Already sorted the bits and pieces to go with it such as alu back cover, batterys, wallet case and docking station so sorted that way :).

Well if you must mess with it then first root it and download Rom Manager/Clockword Mod and save your ROM.

Ok i got a bit of reading up to do as i have no idea what rooting is but you have to remember i am as modern phone wise as winmo 6 so maybe android will give me more options to personalise and i won't need to flash. I really dont keep up with mobiles and until my dog ate it was happy with my omnia. If you have any good links to guides\tutorials would help a lot thx.

Moved off of ICS back to a GB build. Had a very strange issue where my phone would just fail to receive some texts. I'd receive some, but not all of them.

Decided that it was easier just to flash back to a GB build, and wait for the SGSIII rather than mess around trying to find where the issue with ICS was.

Not really necessary, just root and make a copy of the efs folder.

And how does that backup the whole of your ROM?

For Rizlaking:
EFS is a very important directory and does need backing up.
The reason for backing up ROMs:
If you have got your phone to a state where it is OK then it's nice to have a backup (a bit like cloning your c:\drive on your PC).
With your phone rooted and Clockwork Modded you will be able switch ROMs on demand (a friend of mine switches between 3).
You can also use a 3 button method to get into Recovery Mode and from there you can install new ROMs or backups.

Now looking at your last post the SGS is a very peronalised phone and no two Android users are alike and that's all done without flashing.
The only reason we flash is to hopefully make it go a bit quicker but can also bring other problems with it.

Stock Samsung ROM is readily available from anywhere really, what you want to worry about is your efs folder which contains your imei and mac address for your wifi and bluetooth, these don't get backed up in a nandroid backup.

Absolutely but it's still brilliant having a backup of all your ROM so you don't have to mess about re-installing everything.
I only realised this last week when I put a useless ICS Rom on and I hadn't made a recent backup.

ALSO Rizlaking:
Try and put all your contacts onto a Google Account.
I love Googles interaction with the phone (especially Calendar).

So I have a Three branded Galaxy S. Its currently running 2.2 i think. I want to upgrade to 2.3. Apparently from what I have read, I should be able to just update through kies. However, kies says "Your device does not support software upgrading via kies". I am running Kies version 2.2.0. I have tried restarting Kies, the phone and my pc.

Any ideas?

Maybe try one more time with reboots. Also, perhaps use a different computer. There are registry hacks to fool Kies into installing what you want.

However, if you're willing you may as well flash a stock ROM (or better) instead without the bloatware etc. Just check you have 3 button recovery mode active. The phone will be better off for it

It does have the 3 button recovery mode, one of the first things i checked with the phone. I gave up on kies. Trying to install a modified ics (Team ICSSGS) but having issues rooting the phone atm lol.

Have you installed a rooted kernel. e.g. Semaphore? (2.5.0.tar)
That will give you the Clockwork Mod with what you need in download mode to install ISCSGS from sdcard.
After main ROM installation I've then installed the Semaphone ICS kernel which I like more than the included one.

As of yesterday, I am unable to turn my Galaxy S on. The only way it will turn on is randomly(and i mean randomly)

The problems didnt start with me changing any settings, its possible some water got in the phone when I was walking home with it the day it started messing up....but its not the first time i've used in the the rain and it wasn't exactly pouring down.

When the phone is off(even without pressing the power button) the phone turns the screen on and shows and empty battery with a 'loading disc' in the centre approximately every 15 seconds. Its completely unresponsive if i try to turn it on and the 2 occasions it has turned on it has done so by itself. Despite what the display says, the battery is fine, if I can get my phone on again it will probably last a few days. When it was on I noticed I could not get phone signal, i tried switching flight mode on and off before i flashed it but I still wasn't getting any signal and flight mode became unresponsive after that.

I was hoping to go into recovery mode and clear all the settings and such to see if that makes any difference but im unable to enter it. The only way I can enter recovery mode now is if the phone magically turns itself on again. Download mode still works though, ive already tried(probably not done me any favours but its no worse) flashing it to a later firmware but nothing has changed.

Should I just write it off? Im heading away from home in a few days and if i need to get a new phone I want it before then. Its a shame because I would have kept the phone for atleast another 15 months or so.

EDIT: Reflashed to a slightly earlier version, the phone booted fine and i got it into adb recovery mode and wiped all previous data, but it still shows the same thing when i turn it off again. Re-flashing the phone everytime i want to turn it on isnt really much of a solution

Got my galaxy S now and am loving it apart from one really strange thing i can charge it off the usb on my pc but plug it into a wall socket and nothing happens. I bought a desktop battery charger when i got the phone so not really bothering me as i always carry a couple of spare batterys in the case with the phone but a strange problem non the less.

Not a regular problem I've heard of with this phone. You could try flashing again and resetting everything. Maybe there's more help with the experts on XDA devlopers but the randomness of the problem could indicate water damage I'm afraid to say.
Good luck mate

Cheers for the response. I can clear the cache in recovery mode, but in order for me to be able to turn it on again I still need to reflash, which I did a few times last night. I spent over 6 hours on the internet yesterday, looking for a solution to the problem, posting on here was more of a last ditch attempt for a solution. I think im just going to save myself some hassle and order a new phone before I head away again as im running out of time.

I didn't really want to have to get a 4.3" phone as a replacement but it seems thats where all the decent models are nowadays. Im not so close minded as to not look at the apple phones but im losing screen real estate with them and theyre actually more expensive so I will be staying with android. I guess i will get used to it and may even be better off as im quite clumsy with my typing and web pages will always look better on bigger screens.

HTC One S it is then... :D

Thought I'd move off of the TeamICS rom tonight as it hadn't been updated in quite a while and I was having some troubles with camera app.
I wish I hadn't bothered, went for WEUI ICS build after reading some positives, the install has been a nightmare. Seemed alright the first time, but boot loop after restart. Had to restore/re-root, etc. :(
Now on third install, seems to be going a bit better now but I want to go to bed!!!

What was wrong with the camera app? It's not been updated because there's nothing wrong with it.

I use the latest TeamICS and Semaphore kernel, it's perfect.
