Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Sensation

but it stops the phone going to sleep properly so sometimes causes battery life issues.

Well having the Galaxy S and now the SGS (moved from a Hero) i did miss not having the LED's at first, it soon wore off.
If anyone is seriously considering not purchasing a phone because of the lack of a LED and choosing an inferior phone for it then you are most definitely a FANBOY!
I truly loved my Hero. It felt right but a move to a Galaxy S showed me what a fanboy i had become.

There will be eventually a custom kernal that makes the 2 button LEDS come on just like there was for the SGS.

Yup and becaus ethere's two of them you could have a custom set of combinations, both for SMS, 1 for email, 1 flashing for WhatsAPP, 2 flashing for Exchange mail and so on and so on.

Good times lay ahead.

And natively having the ability to play mkvs as well as other formats > not being able to do that without some kind of conversion. My netbook requirements are completely gone now because of this so the pros far outweigh the cons,

I was thinking the same thing bruv. Maybe some people don't like the hardware accelerated browser because it's too fast for them. :D

It's very quick, that's the best thing about it but i don't like the text scaling (doesn't work half the time) and the fact you can't turn off mobile website permanently. ALso there is a weird chequered background effect when you zoom in too quickly. I do like the interface, in fact it's not far off being perfect. All the 3rd party ones have their own faults and i thought the HTC offering was really quite good indeed.

The SG2 doesnt have this? How do you know when you have a text or something?

you have to unlock it if you're using the standard lock screen to see any notifications . i use widget locker as i guess most people do anyway, and i have the notifications bar enabled on the lock screen so i just tap the power button to wake the phone up and i can see if i have any missed calls. coming from a blackberry that was constantly flashing for every text, email and bbm i received, the lack of an led on this sgs2 isn't actually the problem i thought it would be. i quickly got used to it :)

All this whinging about which has the better camera and how one sucks because the lense isn't as good and people overlook something as fundamental as that. It is, of course, a PHONE at the end of the day and not being able to tell at a glance when you have a message or a missed call is a significant failing.

I'm more surprised you're willing to overlook a (reported) superior battery life, screen, slimmer profile, better audio playback quality and more flexible media playback in favour of a flashing LED tbh. If rumours are true and the sensation really does have as poor a battery as the Desire HD it's far more gimped as a phone by that than the lack of a notification LED would cause.

Anyway, NoLED will light up a small square of pixels on the screen for certain types of notification, it is very customisable and doesn't drain the battery as much as you'd think. Failing that just wait for the inevitable mod to light up the button LEDs when you have a text just like has been done for the original Galaxy S

I don't think its quite as simple as overlooking all that in favour of a flashing LED. You draw up a list of needs and wants - of which a flashing LED will be part - and then choose the device that best satisfies these.

I'm not quite sure how you guys keep finding yourself needing to watch 2 hour long high definition movies on a phone, though. I did it once on my Desire as a sort of gimmicky thing and I've not bothered since :p

MHL makes the 1080p playback useful. As the majority of my friends don't own a bluray player, but do own a HDTV, it means i can just chuck a MKV on my phone, grab the cable and pop over for a movie night. As someone who lived with lots of media students back in my university days film nights are common and, as the person with the biggest collection of films, i've often had to cart my PS3 over to a friends house as i only have a bluray of the film we fancied watching.

I often commute, so being able to watch a random episode of a series is hugely useful to pass the time. I generally download HDTV captures of these shows so being able to play them back without transcoding them to a lower res is a time saver.

As for 'the list of needs and wants', I listed them as you still seem to be favouring the sensation when the SGS2 so far seems to have the best feature set. All of the ones i've listed individually are what i would rate as more important than a flashing LED, especially considering that a free app is already available to amend that issue. Iirc it was you a while back complaining that battery life was overlooked in most smartphones and again, if rumours are true, the sensation has very much overlooked battery life once again whereas the SGS2 has arguably the best battery in any smartphone today, if not that then certainly the best in a high end android phone.

I'm sure that would really annoy everyone in the office whilst you were out at a meeting :p

You don't take your phone with you, and/or put it on silent?

Everyone uses their phone for different things, I don't watch movies much on it and if I was going to (on a flight for example) I'd take my iPad 2 for that (though the phone would do a fine job).

However, as Streeteh has said, for me I can't overlook all the superior things in favour of what I consider to be very small things.

How about, make a list of the top things/features you use your phone for so we have a better idea of what you are talking about :)

Mine would look something like this -

Web Browsing - Seems to be faster on the Galaxy S II
Calls/Texts - Even (notif. LED would be nice but I don't think its essential)
Battery life - I don't like worrying about my phone going flat if I need to use it a lot, with the Sensation this would be a worry. The Galaxy S II is a lot better here.
Camera - Better on the Galaxy S II
Build Quality, I like a nice feeling phone - I very much like how the Galaxy S II is designed, and I like it even more with the official Samsung case!
Occasional video - Galaxy S II, lower power consumption and better screen, better codec support
Occasional games- Well, even, but the screen comes into play here
HD Video - I use it now and again, and its better on the Galaxy S II

The screen is just a good overlaying feature of everything above really, so thats a pretty big bonus for me.

Sure.

Important things:

a) Perceived quality. I am a huge perceived quality nut. I like my products to feel like they are hewn from the finest granite even if they are in reality not. I hate plastic stuff. Also with thise goes pleasing styling.
b) User interface. I love a nice user interface.
c) Functionality as a phone. Thats what it is for me - its a communication device first. Phoney features are important. I want to know at a glance if I have texts etc etc.
d) Web browsing - I like to check out the forums when I'm out and about. Though I don't exactly do 1 hour browsing sessions on my phone.

Things I use, wouldn't be without, but are not high up the priority list:

a) Camera. I don't want to take pixel perfect shots from 2 miles away. I use the camera for the odd random shot and nothing more. If I want proper photos when I'm somewhere nice, I've got a compact camera that no phone will compare with.
b) Media. Obviously the ability to play media is essential but I am not a heavy user. I installed Rockplayer on my Desire and have used it about 8 times in total. I do not listen to music on my phone at all really.

I also use various apps etc but this doesn't really matter phone-wise as they all run fine on my Desire.

Basically - I love my Desire. It's a fantastic peice of kit but I'm out of contract, it's showing its age cosmetically, I need to move to a useful service provider anyway, so I may as well get a new phone.

Battery life is an odd one. We'd all like better battery life but for me it needs to be all or nothing. Unless it'll last 4-5 days of proper usage, then I don't really care - I'm in the habit of charging my Desire every night and it's not even a chore anymore. I'd only be concerned if it routinely didn't last a day.

When I am on trains, planes or away in hotels I've always got my laptop as well so my phone is relegated to being a wifi hotspot in these circumstances, whereas I guess some of you guys spend half your life watching movies on a tiny screen.
