Samsung Galaxy S24 Family Thread

Re: camera zoom

I'd say from that tweet the S23u looks better, noticeably so. And no one should buy a phone based on "the previous one had not a great camera then it got better"
I use my S21U camera a lot, and use the zoom a lot. I know the S24U x5 will work better at medium ranges but even with a lower pixel count I can see the 10x on the S23u beating it at max zoom, I'm sure someone can do the maths on that?
It's setting an accurate expectation, the cameras /will/ be better in a few months as that's what always happens, always. These comparisons of a launch day camera output on a new lens and sensor against a model that's had a full year of updates where most of the updates updated the camera are outright unfair comparisons. The very least is that this fact needs to be mentioned in posts or reviews by these outlets, but they don't.

I decided to go for it. I gone for s24 ultra, 512gb pay for 256gb, s6 watch, Disney, xbox game pass ultimate, insurance, 120gb data, unlimited calls.and txts £84 a month

Cheapest way is going via Klarna £34 a month then get 10gb data EE from supermarkets £10, then game pass ultimate £13 and Disney plus phone insurance £10 that's £77 so not too bad

Nah, it's not unfair, it's what it is.
They could mention previous phones being updated/improved, but people shouldn't buy a product based on something that doesn't exist right now and might not happen unless they are willing to accept that potential outcome, if you are, then great.

Justifying a camera mode that's not as good as the previous model when Samsung have enough time/money/resources to have sorted it before release (let's face it, they absolutely could have) is something consumers shouldn't have to deal with.

I was waiting for the 24U to see how it turned out, I won't be buying just yet anyway but when I am ready I'll compare the features/camera at that point in time and buy what suits my needs at that time. Looking ahead that'll probably be an S23U. Don't get me wrong, I WANT an S24U but justifying the cost difference vs what my actual needs are means I probably won't get one.

That's not how it works, camera updates use feedback from both users and testers alike and over the months that feedback and data the phones naturally send back to Samsung is used to improve the camera which is what we've seen since the S10. There's no better testing than actual realworld use, and Samsung seem to be the only phone maker who continually improves their cameras even as far as over a year after release but typically stops after a new model is out unless it's a trickle down feature (expect One UI 6.1 to have the AI stuff in the S23 update later this year for example).

The outlets need to be mentioning this otherwise it paints an unfair picture and the general uninformed reader thinks the old camera is better than the new, when it simply isn't. Case proven simply by reading the comments on that tweet alone.

Well, the old camera IS better than the new one right now, in a specific use case... (?)

Have they changed the other sensors in the camera apart from x5?
No

If I wasn't such a geek with FOMO then I wouldn't spend the extra to go from my s23u to s24u, the s23u is a great phone and would easily still be great for another year. I think the s25u will be quite a big change though(haven't Samsung just hired a new designer from Mercedes or something) and will have a new main camera sensor.

But they don't always listen...

S23 still takes over sharpened images in certain use cases. It's been mentioned time and time again, was mentioned during beta phase of A14. It's still the same

Why do you think the cat on twitter is always moaning about it...

If I was to buy a phone today, I'd buy the S23 on the basis that it's matured. I want to be able to go out and take photos from day one, not be waiting around 3/6/9 months for optimisations to appear to resolve said issues.

Ermmm what? What happens at the end of 2025? How much is it going to cost?
Id guess it'll become subscription based in some way. You need a Google One sub for eg to access magic eraser on Android phones that aren't a pixel. Samsung are probably hedging their bets and planning some sort of subscription AI depending on how other manufacturers proceed with this.

Eraser works on my S21U without a network connection so must be on device? I seem to recall on one of the recent releases turning off connection made some things not work but I thought that was a Pixel ?

Googles magic eraser? You use it on Google photos only but unless you have a Google One sub you don't get the option to.

uhh wish they had snappy cpus all around. S24 looks great all in but I think ultra would be too big for me. I want to get back into android but struggling to find a device that is compact like 15 pro and not clunky and full of stupid bugs like pixel.

Pixels are really good these days

But they did listen, they released Camera Assistant which is an addon that adds more features into the camera with a specific setting for the sharpness control:

Camera Assistant then continued to get updates with new features like optical quality 2x toggle in the main viewfinder, high res settings and so on.

Edit*
Samsung cat on twitter just posts whatever bit of info streamed into their inbox that day. I don't think they are an actual user of these features, at least not to any semi-professional level anyway in terms of photography.

I also refer to the S23 thread where I've been posting photos I take with it from day 1, and from day 1 I was getting pro results which only further improved as time went on.The exact same will happen with the S24 now.

No, Samsung's version. I'd assume it'd still be on device on the S24 but if they can get a subscription out of you then I'm sure they'll change that!

I'm upgrading - went for the S24 Ultra.

Traded in an old S10 I had knocking about for £170 off and got the free Watch 6 which my wife can have.

I will sell my S22 Ultra privately.

Case recommendations? I will never use Samsung's own Silicone cover again as it was an absolute POS, didn't protect the phone well and fell apart

Edit - Must support wireless charging.
