Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Honeycomb Tablet

Im confused, some sites say this isn't out yet? Yet some of you have it?

some people went via ebay as US had this a few months back. Purple shirt people and Dick'sons have them in stock.

There was also a ban imposed from a copyright claim via Apple that was then lifted and then to be decided tomorrow in Germany, meaning they could be banned again or more likely Samsung will get a slap on the wrist. If the ban is held Apple may well go after other tablet makers.

The ban upheld could have terrible ripple effects and see even phones becoming banned... bad apple!

Seriously? There going to stop samsung selling it? Where can i read more on this.

Evening all,
Ive just got a confirmed sale on my iPad 64Gb/3g, and im now looking at getting a GalaxyTab 10.1

Cant decide on capacity and 3g though.
3g does come in handy on my iPad ive noticed, although i'll need to get a micro->full size sim converter....
And capacity wise, if i was honest, i could get away with a 16Gb iPad, so im sort of swaying towards a 16Gb tab, but as theres no SD Card slot, im pondering the 32Gb just in case...

Also a question:
I can go a few days worth of 1-2 hours of web browsing on my iPad before i need a charge and get a good 5-6 hours of video out of it. Is the tab comparable?

Thoughts & opinions?

I got the 16GB one today BoomAM, in terms of your concerns:

You can get an adaptor so that you can plug in SD cards into the tab so 16GB might be viable (this is what I'm planning on doing). In terms of 3G, I personally expect to usually have my phone around with me so tethering should overcome any issues in case I don't have access to a local wifi spot.

As for battery life, the Ars review said that they got nearly 10 hours of battery out of the thing when watching videos at about 50% brightness. Can't really comment on the battery life otherwise seeing as I've just got the tab today ;)

Well my tabs going back, last night it started displaying the oily mark after being on for a few hours. This morning it appeared after 5 minutes - hoping the purple shirts won't cause a fuss.

...snip...
Thanks.

Question about apps...my regularly used apps on my iPad are:

BBC News.
Engadget.
LogMeIn.
RDP Mocha.

Ive found tablet versions of LogMeIn, and from what i can tell, Wyse will do my RDPs for me, what about the other two?

Hows the general landscape for tablet apps in general? Obviously it wont be as good as the iPads, but thats not exactely stunning either...

Also, do we know if IceCreamSandwich will definatelly be ported to the 10.1 when its out? As i dont really want to buy now and find that in 3-6 months time i cant migrate to it...

Thanks.

Took my tab back and got it swapped for a new one, the new one had dust under the screen so now i have a third white one.

Hmm looking at the android market at the moment and it appears that the BBC News app isn't compatible with the tab yet. I'm assuming it's just not Android 3+ compatible yet.

In terms of Engadget it seems decent.
The landscape mode seems good with browsers. Most of my use thus far has really been reading an ebook - working quite well.

I've got LogMeIn Ignition and that seems alright so far. But the android version I've noticed, compared to the iOS, doesn't have the function to shake the device in order to switch screens. Kinda miss that.

One thing that has rather disappointed generally me though is the HD file playback.
The reviews I've read said that it plays HD vids without issue. After getting the device it would appear that you can't throw just anything you've acquired - which is quite a shame as the SGS2 plays the same files fine.
Looking into it, it appears that's it's a Tegra 2 issue. It can't hardware decode High Profile h264 stuff (I think, still gotta do a bit more research into which codec combination works well exactly).

As Ice Cream Sandwich, can't say I've seen anything yet. But I've not looked into that sort of thing yet :)

Well that article doesn't in particular say if it's going to be another CPU or just a Tegra 2 at higher speeds.

Looking at XDA, it's possible to OC the 10.1 tab to 1.4GHz without much of an issue.

I am quite interested in custom roms etc, but only because I like to tinker.

What sort of differences/improvements does installing a custom rom bring?

From what I've mainly seen with the SGS2, is that you tend to get newer builds of the OS than compared to what is released by sumsung via its generic firmwares.

People also tend to theme them sometimes, optimise some settings so that less ram is used by non essential processes etc.

By installing custom kernels you can also update them to the latest version of what the source by sammy is, as well as enable little things like overclocking :)

Does anyone know if we're likely to see Android 4.0 on the tab 10.1?
Are the tablets part of that initiative that Google announced at their I/O forum?

Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to unify the tablet (3.x) and phone (2.x) operating systems. So we should see it on tablets. It is due to appear in Q4. Given that manufactures have signed up to give timely Android updates I see no reason why we should not see it on the 10.1. But having said that we may see it much later because Samsung will have to do something with TouchWiz. It's impossible to say much more at this time.
