*** Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G Thread***

So are there any negatives to this device?

Apps - some aren't optimised for the odd square aspect ratio, you can force them full screen but can result in some cropping and missing information. Games like Call of Duty are unplayable if you want to be competitive, not only with aspect ratio issues but UTG screen feel too soft when in heat of battle, feels like I'm about to damage the screen. With tablet apps being very low priority I don't expect any of these issue getting fixed anytime soon.

Also not being able to individually select tablet or phone view for each app.

Fingerprint reader
- is hit and miss, often leading me to trying a few times to unlock. Part of the problem could be I registered 5 fingers but there is 4 slots. When in my pocket it's also susceptible to phantom unlocking and I get greeted with "Try your fingerprint in x seconds' way too many times for my liking

Weight - the heft does indeed add to the premium feel, it made go "wow" when I first picked it up. It really is substantial when folded, a proper brick. The issue for me is trying to pocket it. If you wear any lightweight clothing, you can't pocket it without weighing down your clothes.

Do you lot think you'll go back to standard phones again?

I never think that far ahead, just enjoying the now. I think most people made the jump because they were bored and wanted to try something different. Fold tech is only going to get better and innovation for most 'standard' phones have plateaued.

I'm having major issues with Android Auto. It's extremely weird.

The first issue I'm having is it won't understand commands. I'll say "Call X" and it comes up with do you mean "X Last name" and I'll reply "yes". It'll then say that it doesn't understand that command.

Then when connecting the phone, Android Auto either won't launch and there's an error message or It'll launch but the UI is messed up (there's a circular home button in the middle of the bottom status bar and a microphone just above it).

I'll try a different cable but again this stuff ****** me off as things like this just worked on my Pixel.

I've managed to fix my Android Auto issue, I reset the phone and started from scratch (used smart switch originally).

Remaining issues I would like to fix:
  • Samsung's UI - I've briefly played with something called #Hex themes which did work well but it also skinned some apps like WhatsApp which made all chat bubbles have a black background, meaning it wasn't easy to distinguish my messages vs the recipients. I'll need to learn more about Hex to see if I can fix that
  • Application choice - I would prefer a different keyboard to Samsung's but even the SwiftKey keyboard that comes preinstalled doesn't have two layouts for the front (normal keyboard) and inner screens (thumb typing)

Oooo its great for reading magazines! The Readly app is nice :)

The finger print sensor on this is atrocious - I'm thinking of reaching out to Samsung for an exchange but I have sneaking suspicion it's not a faulty unit.

With fingerprint sensor not turned continually on (i.e. you need to press the button to wake the device and then read your finger) I'm getting continual messages saying "No match" or "Cover the entire sensor", or "Wipe the finger print sensor". Honestly, my successful unlock rate is ridiculously low. If you turn the setting on that keeps the sensor live so you can unlock the phone and authenticate without pressing the button then you get consistent accidental unlocks - especially when you consider how you hold the phone in fully opened mode.

I've never found the fingerprint sensor that great on any Samsung phone I've tried/owned so far - I've turned it off now on my Note as after a couple of years the accuracy seemed to take a dive and it was just getting more annoying than useful.

Do you have a case on, if so did you register the prints before or after putting it on.? I had the official leather case for a bit and noticed an increase in rejections.

Mind you the surface area is that small your probably right about the poor design.

Nope, no case. It's extremely weird as if I test my fingerprints in the biometrics settings section, it'll register which of the four prints it is 9/10 and the 10th time is an angle which isn't natural/one I tried to store.

I've turned on the 'Fingerprint always on" setting and that has improved things but hasn't completely solved it. I'll get a vibration that tells me the print wasn't recognised and again, I can barely lift my finger off in order to replace it in the same position on the sensor and it'll work.
