Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

grrr dammit lol where are the English reviews!
If my next one has the same red tint once calibrated ill just keep it as its not that much of a big deal but I just wanted to make sure first that its not something that's more pronounced on the one I had. Everything else was great. Beautiful colours, motion better than the LG and I loved the fact that I could put the stand up so high compared to the LG which only had tilt.

I'm curious to see what contrast ratio I get on the replacement too as mine seemed quite abit lower than the chinease? review that I read.

It makes me sad when I see people on other forums using the faster setting. You really only should use standard on these.

One thing that I did notice with the Samsung was that youtube videos 1080p and 4k didn't look as sharp as they did on the LG. I'm guessing because the LG has better upscaling or video processing? Its the only thing that makes sense as my setup is the same apart from the Monitor and I watched some of the same videos I watched on the LG and it was no where near as sharp. Games looked amazing though.

As I alluded to earlier, my unit does have a bit of colour temperature variation - but it's accentuated quite heavily by viewing angle. That is a simple limitation of a monitor of this size and panel type and although I hope your replacement is better, you have to set realistic expectations here.

The graphics card is responsible for 'video processing', the monitor doesn't do anything special when it displays videos compared to other content. I've also noticed that the sharpness is a little worse than on comparable IPS models, but that's down to the pixel structure and is something I've observed more broadly on modern VA panels. I improved text clarity by playing around with ClearType, which I'll detail in my review.

I agree with a lot of the positives you've mentioned on your post, though. The overall image is quite stunning really in a way that only a VA panel can be. It's complimented by a generous colour gamut and of course a lovely curved panoramic screen and good screen surface. And responsiveness... I haven't tested that in detail yet and it certainly isn't perfect - but it's the best I've seen on a VA panel if you keep it in 'Standard', as you say.

PCM2, as much as I've talked myself out of needlessly upgrading to this monitor, any advice you can give in your review on how it compaes to the S27B970D (if you can remember back that far!) would be good ;)

Well that's a difficult comparison. Apples and oranges really. There are some key differences there due to the differences in panel type which will be mentioned in the review. The comparison will be general between this monitor and 'IPS type panels' rather than any specific monitor. I am happy to discuss these sorts of specific comparisons over on my forum as well, but I definitely need to do a little more testing.

I'll also be having my hands on a Dell U3415W very shortly so that will help me get a feel for the differences between them and the two panel types in general where physical dimensions and resolution are the same and screen surface is similar.

@PCM2 - you're absoluely right about Cleartype tuning.... I ended up redoing the process at practically every stage of fiddling with the colours and it makes a difference all right on this Samsung, far moreso than other monitors I've used.

Also, with me using Firefox, the standard text in the menus and bookmark sidebar looked coarse no matter what, so I added an extension to change the text from black to dark gray and now all is super crisp.

Sorry to hear both you guys are having to send back your monitors.

Here's a new Youtube review in Dutch. Hopefully skarpanis can tell us what he's saying :) Their technical measurements on it are here.

no problem, if I get without dead pixel or stuck will keep this bad boy lovely monitor, regard video review I can speak only English little, Russian, and Lithuania :)

Oh a simple "go and buy it now!" would work to change my mind :D

Got mine today and LOVING IT!!! (well apart from one thing but that is just my one)

As said before it looks rubbish out the box but with some tweeks, and maybe more to come, it looks stunning.

My eyes are taking some adjusting to it but lowering the brightness has definitely helped. I also think I may need a bigger desk as i feel quite close to it!

BUTTTTTTT ......... I seem to have some dust particle under the screen which I am a bit annoyed about. I do not think there is anything I can do about it other than get a replacement. It is only small but it still there!

well ive been messing about with icc profiles and i have the desktop and apps looking stunning however games are not looking too great, i read that graphics drivers ignore icc profiles so could this be the problem. so is the only way to get games looking as good as the rest i will have have to find the right settings in the monitor or do adjustments in amd ccc.
i could be missing something in the colour managment settings, not too sure really

I just got this monitor today and apart from the text on my browser, FireFox, it seems all good. Would you mind telling me what extension you used please ? Because the text right now looks bad, although might also be with me using the default browser Appearance on it. But the browser text and my the text while typing this looks substandard.. then again, going from 1920x1200 to this screen (and just used it for about 90 minutes.. lol ) might also have some impact on my impression of the text.. lol

So far though, watching a YouTube video and a quick look in Skyrim it seems to be ok, unfortunately wont have much time to play around with it since going to work shortly. Hopefully have more time during the weekend and can get a better impression of it as well.

Is buying a calibration tool a must or is there another way to calibrate the screen, or just messing around with the settings the best way to go ??

Absolutely no need for ICC profiles on this one, especially not for gaming and general use. Further details in the upcoming review. ;)

Perfect, thanks. :) I await your review of this monitor and will just fiddle around with the settings then until I'm happy. Although, if you already have a suggestion about the text issues I'm all ears. :o :p

I'm not sure if it will help with the Firefox issue as I think it might use its own fonts system, but in general I found text improved by fiddling with ClearType settings. I ran through the wizard and selected the following boxes:

1 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3

I haven't really played around since. That may not be optimal for all users, but it seems to have improved things over default for me quite considerably.

Thanks for the cleartype settings. I'll have a play around with those when I get home. I already have cleartype setup but coming from a 1080p 24" monitor I've been finding some of the smaller text quite tricky to read. Not sure if that's my eyesight or the monitor. I've ended up bumping up the scaling in IE/Chrome to 105% to make the website fonts a bit easier on the eye. Haven't felt the need to adjust the windows font scaling itself yet though.

Colour wise I thought the monitor looked pretty good at the standard settings with brightness at 20, contrast at 75-85 and gamma mode 3 but I'm not using any colour dependent apps for printing/artwork. I'd say the colours look noticeably deeper/richer than my previous IPS panel though (Dell 2007WFP).
