I'm actually having a bit of a problem as when I originally did a 10 hour prime back in april it was fine for 10 hours without any errors. Yet I thought i'd run it again after it crashed 3 times in a row when using some encoding software and it failed prime after 1 minute:confused:
I can't think what would bring about the sudden change as i've not changed anything in my PC :(
Maybe the increased heat puts it over the edge stability wise?

Possibly the memory has become faulty? A useful test might be to run the memory at a lower divider (less stress for it) and check stability again in Prime95 with everything else at the 2.8 Ghz overclock.

With A64 systems CPU speed is most important, first decide the max stable CPU overclock and then adjust the memory keeping the CPU speed at the max.

Memory speed isn't that important with A64 systems and the extra CPU speed gives far better speed than slightly slower memory.
That's so true. It's funny but the A64 really doesn't need bandwidth! Of course for Super Pi the more you can have, the better, epecially at low latency but for games it's not important at all.

On another note, some of you may remember Cliffy's CPU from page 1 and 2 in this thread. I am glad to say that it is on the way to me! I am looking forward to running at 2.7-2.8Ghz on air under a Freezer 64 Pro. It's an E6 chip too.

Hey guys i need some help with my ram speeds as they seem a bit low
printscreen1rl.jpg

basicly in the bios when booting it says its at 266mhz at that overclock but in cpuz its at 165 but if i change the multiplyer to X10 and 280fsb it says its 195mhz in cpuz and can you guys help me to get 3ghz out of my cpu aswell im using 2gigs of corsair value ram so this may hold me back
oh and stepping is KAB3E

cheers

You have your ram on a 266 divider thats why its low, at 255x10 if you put your ram on a 333 divider it will run at approx 200fsb or if you run it at 400 or 1:1 then it'll be a 255.

Go into your bios and where it says your rams at 266 change it so it says 333, save and boot up. That will get your ram running at 200fsb. You'll probably not be able to get it to run 1:1 @ 255fsb so using the 333 divider will be your best bet

You might need to up the voltage to the ram and/or slacken the timings to get it to run stable, I know I had to and I run a similer set up on a 333 divider.
What timings and voltage you running it at at the moment??

stock volts and timings are in screenshot above if thats what u mean, i would rather leave it as it is as the ram got pretty warm when i was clocking it, i have it currently running at 190 so i will leave it at that, thanks for the replys though

Hi, thought i should welcome myself as i have read up this whole entire thread and you guys have got some great results with this cpu! ;)

Right, I have my 3700+ (CCBWE 0542 VPMW, E6 stepping) installed now and the thing that I have noticed is how hot it's running. I am pushing only 1.35V through it but it's idling at 40 degrees and is hitting 51 degrees whilst in a game of Civ 4. Obviously the weather, the relatively high clock speed and the 1mb of cache has something to do with it but I was expecting much less.

It is being cooled by a Freezer 64 Pro with AS5 and is in a case with 2 120mm fans as exhausts. However, I guess that my Thermalright V1 Ultra cooled x1900 is also contributing to the heat in the case, as system temps are in the high 30's.

Hmmmmm.

I have excactly the same CPU, what you have is a failed Dual core Toledo with one core disabled.

Temp wise I can't compare as I have watercooling and run with 1.525V but my CPU temp never gets over 43C at 100% load and 32C ambient temp.

When I first installed the CPU and ran at stock in the winter the load temp was 28C.

I'm afraid i cannot make you feel any better. I too have the same chip which as dutch guy points out is a failed dual core.

I'm using standard cooling, but only have an X800GT in my case and my system temps are 30-32 Idle and 35-38 Under Load. My processor Idles at 39 (When not overclocked) and goes upto about 48-49 under load. Unfortunately you have 2 cores sitting in your chip which is going to bump up the temp, even though only one of them is being used.

Also mine isn't the greatest clocker in the world (understatement :( )

I can run at 2750Mhz with 1.525V but it that's about it, 2850Mhz isn't even stable with 1.625V as it gives a Prime error after 5 minutes.

Same here.

Mine is suffering m/b limitation though. 1.4v is maximum I can put through it, and it will not post at 240Mhz FSB, no matter how low i drop the multi.

But at that FSB the temps are like 46-47 idle!!!

I thought that having a larger die area might make for better heat dissapation. Oh well. I guess I will try reseating the CPU and applying a thinner layer of AS5 to see if that makes any difference. Might also look into lapping my Freezer 64 Pro too.

I have to get temps down before I can entertain any thoughts of overclocking this chip, which should be pretty handy.

I just got one of these yesterday after reading this thread last week, it looked to good to be true ;) Lets just say I'm more than happy with the result, I managed 2869mhz from my chip with a KN1 SLI Extreme Motherboard and an AC 64 Freezer pro.

Full load temp is 42c and it idles around 34c. I think it will go further if I get better memory as I managed over 2.9ghz which seems stable (although not tested with prime) but I had to lower the ram clock to 133 , atm I have Crosair value ram, I guess thats the next upgrade and I'll go for 2950-3000 :)

What is the highest voltage these chips are capable of using with air  and I read on the Artic Cooling site that the cpu paste supplied with the cooler hardens through use to form a better thermal bond with the CPU, how long will it take to get to peek performance
