Sandybridge design flaw recalls beginning!!

Newegg has removed all Sandy Bridge motherboards apart from ASRock.

Not surprising. Why wouldnt they? The last thing they want is customers buying components, only to see this and want refunds. They wont make any money like that, paying for items to be collected from customers. Wise choice imo.

Well you've paid for your PC to work 100%... accepting something that has a slight performance issue (when people are tweaking to get every last mhz, using SSDs as boot drives) is not acceptable.

Can't see who would deem it acceptable, unless of course the people saying that are the ones who have the motherboards?

It's a nuisance. Thats all it is. It isn't 'truely awful'. I have a Sandybridge set up right here so sure it affects me - I've no idea how it affects me until the recall plans are set out. Even base case scenario involves me taking the machine apart, which is a nuisance.

But that really is all it is.

For intel, thats the only problem left. as the fixed chips are already being made.

my understanding from the info so far is it will take intel ~3 weeks to retool one of the production stages for a new metal layer and this will be the delay to late Feburary before they start producing working chips. then they can be fitted to boards and sent back to customers.

not good but plenty of people have had i5/i7 chips running at 4.5Ghz+ since 10th Jan and have had no apparent issues - I'm writing this form a SB running PC! guess what, it worked yesterday, and it will work tomorrow!

much bigger issues for me has been the early troubles with ram comparability, and double posting boards. this is far more obvious to me! im have my dvd drive on a sata 2 port, but don't expect ill see any issue any time soon. ill relax, keep watching for bios updates and rma when the time is right. vertex ssd and 1.5 gig hdd on sata 3 form the start and i'm happy with performance.

This is why you should never buy the first iteration of any hardware. Remember the Intel floating point error?

Yep, I had one of those P60s. You could expose the error with a particular calculation. Never actually noticed an issue in real use though.

It will affect more than 1% of the early adopters. Most people are saying they'll swap their boards, that is them affected.

There swapping there boards because the option is there and they might as well. Not because any part of the board that they are using has any issues.

Ill probably RMA mine also.. Because... why not.. But it will do exactly the same thing my current board did.

Please dont get me wrong, this is obviously a FULLY STAR OUT SWEARING PLEASE up on Intels part. But the person taking the biggest punch here is intel themselves ( with the exception of the QA guy that missed this. He probably just got shot in the back of the head on a build desk. )

All the press releases say it only affect boards which have an i5 or i7 processor in it. I wonder if you used an i3 it would be an issue. Annoyingly exactly what i ordered this morning with a H67 board.
I know it says its the chipset thats at fault and not the CPU, but maybe its the way the board handles quads?

You should be more annoyed that you've purchased an incompatible CPU and Motherboard.

There are no 1155 i3 processors yet as far as I'm aware, and H67 is an 1155 chipset.

And no, it is almost certainly the board - nothing to do with the CPU.

Interesting, I cant get my ram to run at proper timing/speeds either :D

And i get the odd dual post :P

Argh... Got to take mine all apart and take it back, crazy... Oh well, hope they just replace the motherboard there and then I am not going without a PC due to there ****-up.

Better order some CPU cleaner...

Why do people keep saying this?

This is the SECOND GENERATION Core i5/i7 platform. It is not first generation hardware. Sure the chipset is new but then that goes for almost every chipset around!

Is it just me or is nearly everyone thats panicing and moaning "take them off sale, its truely awful" all those that are on everything but SandyBridge?!

Big deal, a potential issue is spotted, the manufacturer acknowledges (fair play), they're deciding what to do with it.

If I was an Admin this thread would be CLOSED until there is any hard and fast news - which OCuk will get before any of us forum (read "rumour") trawlers do. So lets just wait and see.

Remember the statement - SOME, MAY, POTENTIALLY, OVER TIME... please...

This may be interesting then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Motherboard Asus EVO p8p67

Well ive just sent back (rma) a samsung spinpoint f3 1TB drive after a sudden failure one night after 3 days use.

said hard drive was plugged into port 5 (3gbs) and i have never known a hard drive fail so soon or so quickly.

i have sent the drive back to overclockers who sent another straight out after it just kept clicking , after i loud whine and a bsod.

Now i dont know if its coincidene that a drive failed so quickly, or if it has anything to do with this problem.

never had a hard drive fail in any of my builds ever though!!!!

my other samsung drive is in port 6 and is working fine???

food for thought

^^^yeah you're HDD just failed. Only SOME, SATA 3Gbs ports MAY, POTENTIALLY fail. This thread is starting to get on my ****.

Clicking is a mechanical head failure - doubt that is caused by a chipset fault.

Laurence, don't be too hasty. They may well give you a refund for the motherboard... I don't know about the CPU, it isn't faulty.

However they don't have another motherboard to replace it with. They won't be any until March/April.

As it stands tonight with the information available the fault is only on Sata ports 2,3,4,5. You can still use 0 and 1 without problems.

I came here to see other peoples thoughts on the matter, not to moan

Wow, really feel for the Sandy Owners there will be a lot of peeps worried until they find out the proper outcome but it will get sorted, was really enjoying the Sandys competing to get the highest overclock. But to be honest l would certinly not buy a sandy bundle knowing it was faulty, l bet they will have a few set ups running 24/7 to see really what will happen and to see what fails even after Intel have sorted things out. To be honest when have you heard of companies still selling faulty goods, it must be better for Intel to say keep selling bringing in the Doller than nothing at all to help keep the loses down.

Feel sorry for a lot of you guys, but as is stated, this isn't a massive issue, but will be a pain in the butt for some.

Going to be interesting to see how each Mobo manufacturer responds, and how their RMA shapes up, might well help me decide who to choose in summer when I will probably upgrade to SB xD
