Sandybridge design flaw recalls beginning!!

Serves them right tbh. How dare they limit overclocking to only £170+ cpus??!! I'm surprised no one complained about that!

So what they expect is in 3years a failiure rate of 5 - 15%. Not as bad as it looks really.
I wouldn't be so sanguine about those numbers. 15% failure rate over 3 years doesn't actually tell us much: all those failures could occur in the first six months and it'd still be true. Statistically if the problem is limited to a small percentage of P/H67 chips that are weak, or if it occurs only on systems with more than X number of drives connected, then all the affected systems could fail quickly and Intel's reassuring sounding numbers would still be valid.

Hi there

There is a *possible* issue with the motherboard chipset.

CPU's are un-affected!

The issue effects sata ports 2-5 on the SATA 3G. 6G and SATA 3G ports 0,1 are fine.

However this came from Intel just hours ago, when we have concrete information to give out as is there is a recall or not and what the process is we shall make an announcement on the forum, as it stands right now there may not even be a recall, as we have not witnessed any such problem in our own builds and long term testing stations.

I shall be the first to get this information and the moment I have it I shall pass it straight onto the forums and make official announcement and inform all departments within OcUK. Were now just waiting to hear from motherboard vendors and more info from Intel.

Expect a further update within 48hrs, or the moment I get it from Intel/Motherboard vendors as to exactly what is wrong and what the action plan is if one is required.

Hey,

I was gutted when the new Sandybridge stuff came out and overclocked so much better than my i5.... now I'm very very glad I stuck with it!

Come on AMD - heres their best chance if ever.

what will happen to all the old motherboards ^^ scrap and recycle? will they go to silicon heaven?

its a shame as im only using 2 sata devices so 6gb under achi should work fine and i would not need a re call.i dont see why i cant buy one at half price :D and a £230 oem 2600k would help sales a fair bit also as no doubt nothing will be sold until march!are intel going to slash costs of the cpus slighty or just wait it out with no sales for 2 months?

So if a recall does happen and I send off my UD7 from gigabyte will I get back a new UD7 with a new chip set?

You will know when I know.
Right now Gigabyte themselves don't know and neither do Asus.

So myself and no one else at OcUK knows either. Once official statements are made from Intel and the motherboard vendors we shall let everyone know. This could be fuss over nothing as there may not even be a recall, so its just a case of wait a couple of days for further news.

If the recall does take place, what will be the situation with customers looking to buy the affected motherboards? Will they be issued a verbal disclaimer regarding the recall or will all stock be off the market and returned back from retailer to supplier?

Please stop asking such questions, we don't know yet, please read my previous post. When we know you will know.

I suspect Intel and its partners will be putting an action plan together, lets also remember there may not be any recall at all.

So wait and see, but right now we are as in the dark as everyone else.

If i were OcUK i would stop selling any of the Sandybridge mobos etc until they had clear advice etc.

Uh oh, this has the potential to be nasty.

Wonder what all the ASUS conspiracy theorists think now! :D

Though....
"In some cases, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives," the Intel statement read.
That's a PR-mans arse-covering if ever I saw one!

Intel have told us not to do so. Also our RMA rates suggest no issues as do our long term testing stations.

Hence when we know more we shall give further update.

Also if we removed Sandybridge from our website, we'd be giving our competitors one huge helping hand in their sales.

When we know more, we shall pass it on but that will be 24hrs or more away................
