Sandybridge design flaw recalls beginning!!

so if they dont do a recall but admit there is a fault(like they have), can the customer get a swap or refund just on the fact that the board has a fault, even tho it may not be showing it yet?

This we shall know over the next couple of days. We are awaiting further information from Intel and motherboard partners.

That doesnt make sense?

Its only the mainboard and depending on Manufacture they will either swap or RMA replacement. So your CPU is still good.

I wonder if were talking degredation over weeks, months or years. Theres no inclanation how quick it drops, so it could be a small issue or a big one.

Yes but you paid say £200 for a chip you were told has motherboards available for it. If you send your mobo back for replacement now or won't use a faulty one(which many people won't, anyone with anything important happening won't use a chipset thats giving errors to storage) then you've got a £200 chip thats as worthless as a pile of sand.

Yes most people can afford to wait, and use a potentially faulty mobo, others can't.

Theres no particular reason you can't hold on to the chip wait for a replacement, but fundamentally you paid for a chip you can't use with any available mobo knowing its fault free, thats clearly not what you paid for when you bought the chip, its a grey area for sure.

Intel will probably have more than one customer worldwide who won't be happy.

I mean think about it this way, Dell sold you a computer with Sandybridge chip and mobo, they issue a recall, you send it back today, and they can't ship a replacement for 2 months. They'd give you a refund and let you buy an alternate system?

Any retailer should honor RMA due to the fact the manufacturer has made it known that there is an inherent problem with their product. The retailer will pass this cost on to their supplier and at the end of the day this cost reaches it's natural conclusion and is picked up by to Intel.

My advice to anybody that doesn't know what to do with their hardware is to do what THEY want to do with it - be it keep it or return it. No retailer can tell a consumer to 'hold-fire' until they come up with a recovery plan - it's the consumers right especially under these specific set of conditions to return it to their place of purchase if THEY wish to without needing to give any explanation as every hardware retailer has been notified of this problem.

Keep it or return it - that is YOUR decision guys.

This we shall know over the next couple of days. We are awaiting further information from Intel and motherboard partners.

You can't admit a hardware fault and not offer a replacement(not saying YOU, just "people/companies" in general), its just not done.

They've publically told people as soon as its verified because if they knew yesterday and waited till replacements were available to fess up, anyone doing critical work could very easily sue Intel for any work done inbetween Intel knowing and publically telling people.

Its a hardware fault, they've already priced up the replacement/loss of sales costs. There will certainly be a recall, but for most people it will be pointless at least till the replacement boards are in shops.

I would imagine that OCUK and every other retailer will be asked to discontinue all mobo's for the time being, as none of the mobo makers will want to ship products they know will be recalled.

Its fantastic for AMD just because sales for Sandybridge will basically be non existant till the new mobo's are both ready, and all the replacements are forfilled before stock hits shelves, Bulldozer should be basically ready by then with trust in Intel, not shattered, but hurt somewhat.

In the statement over at Anandtech it says,

Intel is starting to have discussions with OEMs today (yep, you read that right) on how to handle the recall and when fixed hardware will be available. This is the reason why there’s currently no official, public recall plan in place. In the coming weeks I expect this to get ironed out but for now the best advice I can give existing SNB owners is to use their 6Gbps ports and wait.

Intel wouldn't be issuing a recall if the problem was negligible.

I think it's pretty funny really (not having bought any sandy bridge components)

This is truely aweful for anyone that has bought these boards.

I can only imagine the frustration I nearly came close to buying one this week and I am glad I did not.

Looks like there will be a recall/replacement of motherboards by all manufacturers.

The problem for you guys is this -

You will have to return the motherboard at cost to yourself (this may be refunded but that takes time). You will then have to wait for the new motherboard to get to you.

Depending on your company and where you have to send it.

Turn around time could be anything up to a few days to a few weeks!!!!!!!!!

How many people want to be without a working PC for any length of time.

This is a crap storm waiting to happen.

Things will get lost in transit, things will get forgotten about and delays will happen.

If you are very, very, very lucky they might do an advance swap out where they send you the new board first and you return the old one.

Chances of this actually happening especially in the UK - 10%

At least in my opinion.

Jesus what a total and utter mess up.

OCUK - you should not be processing any sandy bridge motherboard orders at the very least you should be posting a warning on the product.

Products are now being sold that are known to be deffective!

You might want to wait for official word because you don't want to hurt your sales but caution here is the better part of valour.

That's assuming OCuk have some valour.

Dunno - this reminds me a little of the well known erata on the original Phenom. No recall there, just a BIOS update fix for motherboard that crippled performance and sent resale values of the chips through the floor.

just a question.

just a question.

If its just the motherboards will it still be OK to buy the cpu and wait till the new motherboards comes available?

Because i can buy the other parts and then get the motherboard last because I'm in no rush to put it together because i have an acer computer at the moment.

Having the acer is bad enough but can use that for target practice when the new systems is built :)

Wouldn't it be better to buy the cpu in say a months time? You might find they'll be a price drop. It's not definite obviously, but as there will be little demand for SB until it's all sorted, it's certainly possible. I'd just wait and see how it all plays out.

That's what I'd do :)

I'm still within DSR, but I don't actually want to get the rid of the setup, I'm more than happy with it. However, all this has left a slightly bitter aftertaste to the upgrade. It's also making me wonder if prices do fall, how much will it end up being?

STOP ASKING QUESTIONS, THEY DONT KNOW THE ANSWERS YET

I'm sure Gibbo's felt like shouting that but as he probably cant due to etiquette rules, I'll do it

It has been repeatedly stated that when they know what is happening you will know, so asking the same question a hundred times in different ways isnt going to get a different answer. They are still shipping as they have been instructed to do so by Intel, they do not know if there will be a recall or if there is what format it will take. When they are advised of this they will tell you

But there are no questions to ask - EVERYBODY should be making arrangements to return their motherboards, plain and simple - unless your quite content in owning sub-standard components that you've paid premium prices for and actually believe themselves when they state on forums that they don't care because they only use the sata6gbps. I wonder how far down the line we'll start hearing about other possible issues.

The statement from the competitors website reassures me. Seeing thats where my board will end up going I can imagine.

Im not going to rush to send mine in. Its working!!!

I will send it in at an agreed time by the supplier/manufacture.

Yet intel in their official press release are saying there will be a recall.

So no OCuk should not still be selling product they KNOW is faulty.

Intel have stated it is faulty and can only be fixed in silicon. How do you propose to fix it where intel can't without a recall?

So OCuk are as of the time of the intel official announcement selling defective product knowingly without informing buyers.

Yes the site does take orders all through the night!!!!

Think about that one.
