Saving Sessions / Demand reduction thread

I still don't have an export tariff, so I was just awarded 8 points for each session, woo :p

It would be nice to be able to earn some credits against my massive gas bill.

£10.44 for me on the last one, so it is £71.21 in total over the four sessions.

Hopefully there isn't one today as Fox's web portal has been down for "maintenance" for 3 days now and I can't set anything.

Missed the first one but yay.

Just a heads up that according to somebody allegedly from Givback there is going to be a short notice session this evening, so worth keeping an eye on the Octopus (or whoever) website, Whatsapp etc. and potentially charging\pausing your battery if required (this came from a Facebook group, so can't vouch for the reliability)

Chaps that are making mega bucks - can someone ELI5? My boss at work has a solar setup and I couldn't get him excited on the $$ from last years scheme, but it seems this year you are making bank on the export rate?

The difference this year is that they are paying for any extra you export as well as what you cut down your usage by. The important thing is having a battery that lets you force discharge, rather than having solar (as you're unlikely to be generating any significant solar at the times the sessions occour), as you can just force the battery to discharge at its maximum output and export extra to the grid.

I'm no expert, and there is probably a cheaper/better way to do this than the way I'm doing. Buy here goes.

The terms I use are for a Solax Inverter, they are likely to be different for different inverters. Also, the amount and rate you discharge to the grid will depend on the size of the inverter.

I am currently on Octopus tracker, so I don't have a cheap time period to charge my battery.

On the day of the Saving Session, I stop my battery from discharging to the house. So any solar generated that days stays in the battery. If the saving session is from say 6pm, I set my inverter to force charge my battery from say 4 pm as I try to have 100% battery at the start of the session.

At the start of the session, I change the inverter settings from "Self Use" to "Manual - Force Discharge". For me, this sends 5kWh to the grid and also serves the house with its electrical needs, which is about 500w.

At the end of the session, I change the inverter setting back to "Self Use"

As I see it, to charge the battery costs about 19-22p per kWh, whilst Octopus pay between £2 - £4 per kWh

To add to above post.

Last year they didn't take into account export which seeing as its a shortage of supply to the grid at not £LOL (the last bits of generation are indeed £LOL).
It was clearly a bit dumb where part of the future grid strategy was utilising various consumer to grid schemes (cars batteries etc) and yet it was excluded.
So along with deleting the in day adjustment (how you made £s in 22/23 season) they added that export is now included in domestic payouts, so your net improvement counts and not simply your net reduction.

You 100% need batteries though. No one is going to be generating solar when the majority of the sessions are likely to be. (generally 4-7pm peak)

I spied on another forum that @94JDH is making a nice tidy amount, but can't remember their setup.

As for myself I've stopped exporting every day after 16:30, so between 16:00 and 16:30 I discharge to the grid at around 8kW.

Then when there is a saving session I set my system to discharge at the same rate, and we also reduce usage, if I need to, I'll charge the batteries mid-afternoon, but haven't had to yet.

Spot on.

The next Saving Session:
Today for 1 hour between 17:00 - 18:00

Opt in now to earn 1800 Octopoints - worth £2.25 - for every unit of power you save.

PS it's so nice I can now easily set the schedule from my phone

I've managed to opt in this time, previous sessions just said no and gave me 800 points. Maybe my smart meter is magically working again since thismorning but still not holding much hope. Nothing on the app since Oct 27th.
