At 41, MS is definitely past his best. He knew this in 2005 and 2006, when he lost the title to Alonso..

The rot started way before then but was hidden by 3 or 4 years of the best car ever built in F1. Ferrari hid the true pace of the car race in race out and whacked in 3 or 4 laps during pitstops and wouldn't just leap 1 car they would leap multiple cars.

He had a slow decline like many other drivers but happened to be in the best car for a long period of time which hid that somewhat. Its rare really for drivers to get that long in a dominant car.

BTW, what was the official reason MS gave for quitting F1 in 2006?

Ferrari, wanted to sign KR, Brawn and Schumacher didn't want that. They wanted to pair KR and MS. MS didn't want that, he offered to carry on racing but without KR. Ferrari were looking to the future and didn't want to lose kimi.

They signed Kimi and MS announced his retirement, Brawn took a holiday.

There are plenty of article from the time about how MS was effectively forced to retire.

Great news if it gets official confirmation :)

How will Rosberg be feeling? Will he beat Schumacher?

Rosberg is a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment. He should be very good (assuming the Merc this season is a decent car) but he hasn't had a top car to drive yet so could either challenge MS very hard or may just do a Trulli / Kova / Barichello / Fisi.

Well, this is shaping up for an intriguing season.

Button vs. Hamilton at McLaren.

Alonso back in a top flight car.

Schumacher at the freshly Mercedes backed Brawn.

Even if Michael is lacking his old pace it should do wonders for Brawn when it comes to the technical challenges of the season.

Anyone know what the situation with KERS for next season is? Will McLaren/Ferrari be running it?

The teams have agreed to not use KERS next season, although it is still available as far as the rules are concerned.

I don't think there have been any further announcements about it since then.

I was right all along ... filling in for Massa and that not going his way sparked this comeback, if that wouldn't have happened I doubt we'd be seeing him here.

Schumacher, at Mercades with Brawn and a 3 year contract, excellent news, absoloutly brilliant I have really missed watching this guy's genius around a race track the last 3 years.

I thought it was going to be pretty simple for 2010, Button and Lewis at McLaren so I can support a nice British team and 2 British drivers, and then Schumacher comes back and ruins my plans, lol ... oh well I'll figure something out!

call me a skeptic but I think he did secret testing with the ferrari and realised it was a complete dog like the other stand in drivers found :p
