Schumacher to Mercedes GP?

call me a skeptic but I think he did secret testing with the ferrari and realised it was a complete dog like the other stand in drivers found :p

Dog or not (which I don't actually think it was, Kimi's heart wasn't in the sport and he did pretty well in that car, and the stand in drivers were not of the right standard), if he would have been able to return for Massa he would have done so, the Ferrari in 1996 the year he signed for them was a dog of a car and hadn't won a race for ages, that changed when he got there ... he still signed though didn't he.

you are missing a huge difference though imo

He wanted to be the one to bring (the huge name of) Ferrari back to winning ways - when he was probably his most popular, at the peak age , and really in tune with the sport etc

Huge difference to having several years out - in some respects on the sidelines - and coming back to a dog of a car (without mid season testing) to a Ferrari he had never driven on those tyres with very limited testing with no hope of winning the Championship

Plus - Im not entirely sure, but didnt the Ferrari improve quite a bit after Massa's accident - ie MS may have had to race a very uncompetitive car for a few races before it was any good

Schumacher, at Mercades with Brawn and a 3 year contract, excellent news, absoloutly brilliant I have really missed watching this guy's genius around a race track the last 3 years.

I think MS's Myth has been growing a little too much over the last 3 years.

Don't expect to see him in the same form he was in during the late 90s and early 2000s - in 2005 and 06, he was past his best and Alonso had his number. 3 years away from the sport won't have made him quicker.

Its difficult to say how well he will do in 2010, but don't expect miracles. I fully expect Hamilton and Alonso to be the 2 guys to beat in 2010. MS may be a factor, but Mercedes will have to come out with probably the best car in the field, for this to be the case.

Right now, there really are too many variables to be able to make any sort of reasonable prediction of what will happen in 2010.

Hell...we don't even know if Alonso will be able to beat Massa or if Hamilton will be able to beat Button...let alone MS.

MS's return is definitely good for F1 though, from a business standpoint.

I'd really like it if we had a set of cars this year which were genuinely all really competitive. The prospect of MS/Massa/Alonso/Hamilton/Button/Vettel is very nice! I'd also dearly love to see Kubica up there if the Renault was decent but I don't think it will be. I really believe if he has a good car underneath him and can be arsed he would do really, really well.

Imagine how Brawn would have treated Barrichello after they did to Button

(yes I know all the media have been filled with "happy" quotes and "new challanges" - but to me that sounds like a front)

How come there cars sparked so much back then?

From what I recall, in 1992, they could run the car as low as they wished/dared. The advantage to this is that the lower the car is, the more ground effect you get and the higher cornering speed.

In 1994, after the Senna crash, they brought in a rule, stating that a plank had to be placed under the car and that this plank must not be worn too much, after a full race distance. If the plank wears too much during a race, it means that the car has been ridden too low and you will get DQ'd. MS and Bennetton ran the car too low and their plank wore to thin, meaning that MS's Spa win in 1994, was wipped out. He also received a 3 race ban on top of that. He still won the title though.

he didnt get a ban for the skid block wear that was for an incident at a different race where he ignored a black flag and it was a 2 race ban

he only managed to win by cheating in Aus - but of course thats irrelevant isnt it

He also 360'd it over a sawtooth kerb in that Spa race so there's no way of knowing whether the plank wear was solely due to running too low or not.

Had sawtooth'd curbs come in by that point, I thought they were still smooth in most places at that point?

i dont think it really matters anymore wether the wear was natural or from the curb he did far worse things in his career maybe FranKJH and dannyjo22 should get together some time and have a pint of BITTER
