Schumacher to Mercedes GP?

So what's the odds on him not coming back, I still think it's unlikely.

I think he will come back, though it depends on the sort of car that Mercedes offer him. I think he will wait till January to decide, when they will release the new car and when Mercedes will have an idea of how their car compares to the rest of the pack.

I can't fathom why or for what reason he would want to come back.

My sentiments, exactly.

The reason he'll want to come back is simple: He is used to getting his jollies in an F1 car. Most retire because they are either bored of it or too unfit to do it. MS is neither and still wants his jollies. He's also used to being in the top 5 in the world at what he does but is too old to do anything exciting and reach that peak other than F1. I suppose he could do carpet bowls or darts at 41, possibly even croquet and be top dog in 10 years but where's the excitement in that? F1 will let him enjoy a couple more years of high-octane thrills in a relitavely safe environment, certainly compared to bikes.

Good on him I say.

Hardly surprising as you don't know the guy. What kind of reason are you looking for? He doesn't need the money? That's rubbish as the world is full of very rich people who carry on working hard to become just a little bit richer. He doesn't have anything to prove? Prove to who?

Why can't you guys see that he doesn't need a rational, logical reason. Maybe he just wants to. Maybe he finds F1 fun. Maybe he likes working with Brawn.

Aren't those kinds of reasons possible and more than enough. Maybe his value system is just different to yours, reasons you discount are important to him.

I too have trouble understanding people who say they cannot see why he wants to come back.

He wants to spend the year playing with the worlds most advanced racing cars.

Wouldnt YOU?

And there are many new ways to cheat that haven't been done yet - much work to be done! (joke!)

Because he was at the top, holds all records. He is fairly old for an f1 driver, he hasn't driven f1 for a few years and has nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Exactly - this is your value system. His may be totally different. How do you judge "nothing to gain"? By discounting a heap of stuff which you don't see the value of but which he might.

I'm not discounting it. It is odd for an f1 driver to come back if he felt like that why did he leave. I can't imagine much of his thought process has changed.

I see it more as he would enjoy doing it and people are offering him stuff and he's finding it hard to resist the call. But more than likely doesn't really want to come back.

even when he was goign to step in for Massa he said it was a temporary thing and he did not want to come back.

I'm sure he does, but you have the media, reputation and hard work as well.

this isn't a track day where you turn up have some fun and go home.

No, it is a series of track weekends where he gets to turn up, have some fun in one of the most technically advanced cars on the planet with a group of mates around him who will make it work to his spec AND he'll get paid €millions in basic with shedloads more from sponsorship, bringing brand Schumacher back into the public eye.

Is that how you think it works. He would have to be a big part of development and set-ups. it's not a walk in the park and it's not a turn up on Friday and go home on Sunday job. Unless he would be happy in the midfield which he would not be.

Well, being as that was his day job with Ferrari...

And why will he be midfield? Because of his age? He's tremendously fit and look at RB this year - oldest man in the field and he was in for the WDC up to 3 races before the end of the season and he was never as good as MS, so why won't Schumi still be able to do it?

if he treats it as a weekend job to have some fun he will be in midfield. It is hard work especially with reputation and media. it is not a track day every other weekend like you are suggesting. He will be expected to teach the other drive and give huge amounts of details on the car. It si far from his advisory position with Ferrari.

Dude, F1 doesnt work like that and drivers have to work far harder than you seem to think. If he simply turned up every other weekend, he would be nowhere. MS is good, but he isnt "that" good.

I laughed so hard when I read this.

You should take up comedy!

I was being flippant in response to some equally flippant comments posted here. He has an 'advisory' role at Ferrari, sure, but he won't have just been there at the weekends either, it'll be a different role sure, but he did do it for a few years so I reckon he might have some inclination of what the job entails...

I am also sure he will really enjoy it, otherwise he wouldn't be doing it!
