Scrypt mining gold rush finally ends

Pretty much the same as the GK104/GK110 cards. My Titans for instance will throttle at 70c (not that I see that because of water). They only throttle by 13Mhz at a time and just enough to keep it cool.

It's not throttle as in the traditional sense is it?

From what I remember of owning Nvidia's Kepler, it boosts past its "base" speed, however as temps raise 70c, the boost lessens.

That's not quite the same really.

Yep, base clocks are 867Mhz for instance and boost clocks are 1087Mhz and it will throttle to 1074Mhz, so it never drops below its base clock. If it ever did, the card is broken :p

Yep what Martini says, NVidia cards have a guaranteed base clock it's just the amount of boost which lessens slightly.

AMD 290 line don't have a base clock so they can throttle well below the advertised speed, you look on the AMD website their latest cards don't actually list a clockspeed just "up to xxx".

I know who is to blame for the fall of mining...

Yeah it can't. It's hardware limited. AS soon as it hits 95 degrees it increases fan speed to cool it down. It increases the fanspeed to whatever is set in the overdrive settings. Lets say you have it in uber mode for the 290x, it increases fan speed to 55% when it reaches that speed and if it still needs to cool down then it throttles performance.

I suspect that when the 290s are used in 3 and 4 way setups it is possible to get them above 94c even if throttling kicks in due to the temps overrunning.

I have not tested this myself and I don't think I want to try.
