Second hand prices

Well it's worth remembering it's one of the higher end 3080's, with a great overclock and silence. But there were plenty on sale and mine was at the lowest end. I don't think you'll find many in decent condition for less than 500. I just checked and yeah I'm right filter to buy it now and nothing is below £500, it's not really a realistic expectation to set IMO. £400 would be a great price too.

Apologies but I specificaly stated not to use buy it now. Buy it now is what people "think" their GPU is worth and is rarely based on reality.

Here is the part of my quote where I clarified (admittedly sarcastically) that you should not use buy it now.

"If you bid more than that, or are impatient and fall into the buy it now or "I won't let someone else win" trap, that's your problem."

If you limit your search to auction only, then you will see some are sitting under £500 with only a few days bidding left. They may go above £500, or they may stay below but they key is being patient. Looking at recently sold items shows an average of about £500 as the eventual sold prices.

yeah there are a few RTX3080 10GB sold for less than £500 on ebay actually. EVGA one as well.

bodes well for the used prices.

This is the point, the OP asked for what is a good price and regardless of what many "think" their used 30x0 is worth, the reality is what they are going for on used market sites.

You may get lucky as a seller but if you are buying one used and keep patient, you will get one at a good price. The chance of getting a very good used one less than £500 is going to significantly increase in the coming weeks, as the 4090 is released.

4090 wont sell out...demand for that GPU wont be high. especially with readily available RTX 30 series in shops/market places/trade in shops etc at significant discount.

a lot of 3090 got sold this gen cos people couldnt get lower teirs due to scalpers/miners buying up everything. also Nvidia was cranking out loads of 3090 cores as it is lucrative for them.

steam survey suggests gaming RTX 3090 has been flat for yonks. without mining and without a resell market, 4090 is doomed to be niche and bragging item.

If the 4090 sells out I can imagine a scenario where 3080's actually rise in second hand value. Could go either way IMO.
One of the main reasons nV has priced the 4-series so outlandishly is to bolster and stabilize the price of the remaining 3-series stock. The intended beneficiary of this tactic is the remaining new stock of the 3-series, but it will also have a similar effect on the used market.

While used top-end 3-series cards will see some price fluctuations, it will be nothing near what we've seen in prior years when a new gen drops since nV is artificially inflating their relative value. The cost of a used 3080 now will not be that different to a used 3080 in December.

Even when the 3080 performance equivalent launches in February e.g. 4070, used 3080s will likely retain value since the costs between the 3080 and 4070 will be commensurate ~£700. And relatedly, what we see with the above dynamic illustrates a sad state: a 0% price/performance gain across generations.

If a 4080 12GB is ~£1000 (or less) and is as fast as a 3090 then that invariably means the 3090 will have to come down in price. This will in turn drive prices down on the lower tier 30x0 GPUs.

So RTX 30x0 prices will not drop significantly but they will drop.

I can see all 3090 coming under £1000 soon, Palit one is already under 1k. Hopefully they'll drop to around £800 on 4 Series release and it will push 3080ti further down :D

This is normally what happens. Regardless what the marginally delusional think, 30x0 prices have been dropping and will drop further. It's funny seeing people claim that jumping through hoops for a discount doesn't count. Yet many of those same people probably used stock trackers and reddits to find their 30x0 or 6x00 GPU last year.

in case no one has suggested it,
Can anyone recommend what a good second hand price is for the current gen cards below. Sorry if asking for a lot but keeping an eye out on market place and just have no clue what is a good price to potentially snap up!

3090
3090ti

3080
3080ti

6950xt
6900xt
6800xt

I have seen a 3080ti for £3080 which doesn’t seem legit? But also one for £550, considering they are 800+ is that reasonable?

Or is it too risky to buy second hand and just worth paying more for the warranty?

Thanks in advance
in case no one has mentioned it yet, I'd suggest having a look at the Overclockers clearance section. You might find a bargain in there.

There's still some good buys on ebay but there's also a lot of overpriced rubbish. Scratched, marked up cards full of dust used for mining, low tier cards that will have high memory temps and be noisy that are priced if they're high tier etc. Then there's the warranty. It doesn't help that between some of the listings you've got damaged and faulty cards along with refurbished ones :D

Yeah it's definitely a wheat from chaff procedure.

You also have the "hardly used, a bit of light gaming". Oh and you have six of them with identical pictures, mmm'k seems like a legit good buy.

My favourite is a description that just contains the model name. As if they couldn't even be bothered to type anything more. It's sometimes different to the actual model they're supposed to be selling.

Maybe, if you're good at haggling and willing to haggle and knowledgeable about the current prices of stuff. The prices in the clearance section are very often wrong and it functions primarily as an invitation to haggle. Also, of course, the warranty is extremely short. 30 days IIRC.

Have a look, sure, but not in much expectation. I've bought from the OcUK clearance section half a dozen times and only lost out once (with a case that was battered and bent and broken and had the entire front completely missing). The motherboard I'm using right now was from OcUK clearance. £50 and I couldn't detect any difference from new at all.

I'm not advising against it, just that it's a lot more of a haggling market than it used to be. Personally I have neither the skill nor the desire to haggle.
