EVIL EVILLLLLLL

Lol i can explain honestly. My harddrive failed in my laptop so instead of buying a new one, i am running a Knoppix (linux) from ram. For some reasong its quicker using the GUI with WINE than it is to use the proper linux version of seti classic. :confused: Suppose it isn't optimised. I am gettin WU's done in 4-5 hours which isn't too bad i suppose. Although in windoze i could get one done in around 3 hours with the CLI. Maybe i should splash out on a laptop harddrive....

Configure WINE to use text mode and use the Windows CLI client. :)

I tried looking for an option to put it in text mode but cudn't find one, i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to linux.

Also I dunno if anyone here can help but i've had a very unlucky day with computers. MY athlon 1700xp won't even show a boot screen. It powers up but gives a 3 second intermittant beep and thats it. I think i may have damaged the processor when installing the heatsink.

Also on my pentium computer i decided to run memtest and it found hundreds of errors with my brand new ram. I don't know if its a problem with the software, the memory or my motherboard. This computer is working but is producing the odd error now and then.

Now how can i help to beat the germans :confused: :( :(

If anyone can offer any help please do.

Thanks...

Mark

First, switch to the CLI client, then edit ~/.wine/config

Find the [wine] section, and change:
"GraphicsDriver" = "x11drv"
to:
"GraphicsDriver" = "ttydrv"

Sounds like it. Post system spec and description of problem in an appropriate hardware forum, and I'm sure someone knowledgeable will help you. :)

If you're using dual channel, try testing one stick at a time. If your motherboard allows it, try a small increase in volts (up to 2.75v usually does no harm). Again, post in Memory section for more help.

Running SETI@home (or any DC project) on an unstable system is generally a very bad idea.

Thanks i'll give the CLI a go once the evil GUI has finished with my current work unit. I'm not sure if theres a setting in the bios to change the voltage, if not is there any other way to do it? with the motherboard jumpers maybe? Anyways hopfully things will be ok and i can get back to crunching. Only 19 days to go till... THE END :o

With Beep codes No beeps is usually dead processor (since it's beeping it's not that), some beeps is almost always unseated Ram or Graphics card. Re-Seat the Ram and the Graphics card and see if that works. If it doesn't it's likely your Graphics card or your RAM is dead.

If you google for beep codes you should be able to find a list of beep patterns and what they mean.

Hmmm, so since we apparently still have a major WU shortage, anyone got any ideas as to how we can do this? Also, anyone got any ideas how to join the OCUK team, because when I just tried the join button I got a cgi error :confused:

Me thinks the germans have 4ax0rd borkeley! I suppose the only solution to not been able to join would be to get people to run under existing email addresses such as team caffeine.

Eek, looks like they buggered the join page :/

If you don't have any WUs to transfer then you can use an existing e-mail to crunch under, and if you do have WUs....I guess it's a case of waiting for them to fix it :/

Ya but that will scupper any chances of getting people to join with existing credits, just as I was pimping some friends :p

My laptop is now steaming through WU's with the CLI under WINE. Thanks to beserker for that bit of advice. Strange thing is when i ran the cli for the first time it didn't ask for any info. When i looked in the user info.sah file it didn't conmtain my email address, what it did have however is my name and how many WU's i've done and the number is going up each time so something must be right. Guessing i'll just leave it to crunch away. Not sure how long its taking for the cetrino but i'll post up some times when i have time to have a look. My pentium 4 2.66 is coughing a WU up in less than 3 hours and hopefully that will be on most of the time. Also i tried overclocking my 1700xp by increasing the FSB in the bios from 133 to 140mhz. The computer seemed to have a few probs after that but i think thats just because its running windows so i'll do a fresh install on that and see how fast i can safely get it. By the way when you increase the FSB does that increase the FSB of the graphics card and memory too? not sure quite how it works. Happy crunching everyone....

Nov 23rd the gap was 197737.
Nov 27th the gap is 167851
Reduction of 29886 in 4 days is 7471/day, with 18 days to go leaves us 33000 behind at the finish:(

We need more joiners! Or do berkley know this and have turned off the ability to join so we give up? Grr! it's soo close:)

I'm no expert but I believe it depends on the motherboard. In theory, yes it does, but many motherboards allow you to lock the pci/agp multiplier at 66/33 etc in the bios. Do you see any setting like that? The memory multiplier can also be changed from 1x multiplier if necessary.
