Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

Electromod are the official Schiit retailer for the UK - not had any problem with dealing with them myself. They could certainly do with paying someone to sort out their website though as half the links are dead.

Starting out with the HD650 with a Schiit Modi 2 & Vali 2 stack would be good as it would probably be an end game set up for most people - improving on it would be a very expensive bit of shopping.

I've found that to be the case with the commonly recommended/workhorse op amps OPA2132/2134, NE55xx series, etc. but I've found others that atleast for me sound decent (and I've always been a sucker for SS bass). I say it half jokingly but I wouldn't be surprised if the OPA213x are responsible for driving a lot of people to tube amps.

There is also the issue that in a lot of cases the DAC or soundcard will have a run of the mill op amp hanging off the output of the DAC as a buffer which will have some influence (though not as much usually as whatever you are using as the gain) on the sound even if you are running a tube amp unless you are picking something specifically designed to connect to something else and not drive headphones directly.

I've started to prefer a lot of in house stuff. One reason I bought the Mojo wasn't because it got good reviews but because it was all made in house and not just passed around(And the funky lights :D

There's been some really great solid state amps though but they have ended up being silly money! really enjoy the Eddie Current gear. Yea I'm with you on the SS bass, more visceral where as tube bass tends to be a bit more fluffy in comparison.

Probably a stupid question but what's the durability like on tube amps? I'm assuming all the schiit stuff comes from the US of a. Ever had an amp that's come with a broken tube or do they come packed and you have to screw/plug them in? Can they take a few knocks on the desk aswell?

Like I said complete and utter audio noob haha

I've ordered a lot of stuff overseas and had quite a few tube amplifiers and never had anything arrive broken. You will be fine. If you are concerned wait until electromod get some back in stock as they ship next day delivery.

Just general curiosity towards build quality really as I'm just learning all this stuff :p
I probably will end up buying from electromod as I don't have the fund as of yet anyway :)

Schiit stuff is quite well built don't really hear any issues. I've got one of my HD650's for sale in members market which are hardly used at all, I was going to use em for modding but didn't get around to it and no point having two pairs lol so if they are still up for sale when you are interested might be a decent deal for you.

Can't say I'm a fan of faffing with different 'sounds' that amps give. DACs are a non-issue, even your cheapest ones these days are completely transparent. £100 or more and you're sorted. I prefer an amp that'll give me the most transparent sound as well - I want the headphones to do the altering of the sound, not the entire chain - that's just asking for constant, expensive upgrades/sidegrades when I'd rather just change the headphones instead. :D

My previous DAC/Amp combo when I had HD650s was the NJC Audio stuff that is handmade by some bloke in England. £800 for both the amp and DAC - it was a lovely built bit of kit! Had a tiny surface scratch on my amp appear out of nowhere and the guy happily took it back and resurfaced it as well as he knows the pain of your expensive kit getting a ding - can't fault that!

Damn, all this talk makes me want to go out and just rebuy the damn things immediately. (HD650s)

Won't be for around another 2 weeks - a month until I can afford stuff unfortunately otherwise I would as I love a good deal. what cables would you recommend getting for modi/vali? Also decent replacement cables like mrk has bought himself for the 650s? I wonder if I could get somewhere like pexon to whip up some custom braided cables as I'm a sucker for nice looking cables

I sent Electromod an email and received a reply with them mentioning that they have a new site now:

Well i've joined the club after my q/a thread (link).

Everything arrived today so i've only had a quick play but impressed so far (liking the detail).

HD650's
Objective O2 amp
Audio123 1.2m cable (nothing cute just needed something shorter than stock)

Surprisingly what strikes me most at the moment is my little Fiio E06 drives them perfectly fine, more volume at full than i can tolerant. Thought these were meant to be hard to drive! Running it with my old S4 phone for on the move listening is fine.

Debating an external DAC for my gaming PC but everything sounds sweet as it is with zero noise at full volume / no emi through either the O2 or E06. And that's through the front 3.5mm case output vs rear panel.

Main listening is done on my htpc rig with an AMD 6450 so the audio is streamed directly over hdmi to an Onkyo TX875 amp (PCM1796 DAC) using Winamp + Yet Another wasapi plugin.
