Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

Depends how you mean hard to drive - they don't take much current (3-4ma IIRC) but they do like lots of voltage swing to get the most out of them.

They don't take much to sound loud. My laptop on it's own can get em sounding loud enough but things sound smeared, bass more boomy, indistinct.

Ah, can't say i as noticed any drop in quality but that's probably more to do with my ears. Will do some more testing over the weekend when i've more time. So far enjoying the detail and placement on the huge list of tracks i've cued up.

I've been feeding my HD650s with some quality sounds tonight ...

Nitefly by Donald Fagen
Hotel California by Eagles (HD remaster)
Everything Must Go by Steely Dan
Permanent Waves by Rush (HD remaster)
Aja by Steely Dan

All are extremely high quality masters that haven't been "optimised" for the volume wars, so no clipping, just lots of dynamic, clean music. The first thing that you notice is just how great the bass sounds, it's clean, crisp and impactful, none of the mush you tend to get with most pop music from the last 20 years or so. The percussion is ridiculously precise and clean, every drum and cymbal is right there in the sound stage as though you were in the studio. Guitars and vocals are stunning, just no other way to describe them and when someone lays down some saxophone, well that should just be illegal. :D

Yeah I'm the same. I mean there's headphones that can wow you but then you go back to the 650 and it just sounds magical. I'm still trying to find a headphone that can flat out beat it, in under a grand and honestly it's really tough. Some headphones fool you with exaggerations in the response and you forget about the 650, until you put them back on.

I've yet to find a headphone that nails the timbre of instruments and the human voice as accurately as the 650. I know people must think I exaggerate how good this headphone is but honestly, I really feel it beats almost everything out there!

I know what you mean, I absolutely love the sound from my Fidue A73s, more and lower bass, more shimmer to cymbals, it's like everything is turned up to 11 - but then I listen to the same thing through the HD650s and it just sounds "right". :D

The £15 1.2m cable I got is just a bit too short I'm finding. Keep snagging it due to being about 30cm too short. I thought the old short cable for the K7XX was the same length but side by side the length of the K7XX one is a bit longer, though the same cable. Ah well. I'll have to order a 1.8m one instead, sadly this costs a lot more, but at least it won't be 3m like the stock cable, dragging around and stuff :p

Does anybody want a 1.2m cable for the HD650 (also fits other headphones with the same connector)? Will put it up on MM if so, otherwise will just keep in a box for a day it /might/ come in use.

You guys have just awakened me from a deep sleep!
I have my 650's in the original box, and....
have never used them!!!!

My lad has tried to prize them from me,many times, but I have resisted all his time.

P.S. just checked my profile, yikes!

Best have a read of the sig rules before you get suspended...

A signature may contain one or more images but they must fit within a box with maximum dimensions of 400 x 75 pixels (width x height) and with a maximum (combined) file size of 20k. Images containing mostly very large words or animated .gifs will not be permitted. You may also add 1 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text directly above or underneath the image with no spaces inbetween image and text. If no images are used then up to 4 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text is permitted. Do not pad out your text lines with blanks lines. A line of text is defined as having a maximum length of 400 pixels.

This kinda tells you how much the 650s impressed me to the point of selling the K7XX!
