Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

just a little tip - i have the hd600's and i find that the hd650 cable not only is thicker but sounds better than the standard hd600 cable.

Ok so I'm loving the headphones and am now looking to upgrade from my asus dg. Will I hear much difference with an stx? I'm thinking of getting a bottlehead crack kit near the back end of the year but how long does the valve take to warm up and what's the life expectancy? I only ask as I have a baby so can't spend as much time relaxing anymore so it could only be on for half an hour at a time.
So the choice is
Asus stx -> bottlehead crack
DAC (Modi user) -> bottlehead crack
Or any other ideas

If you buy an unused tube it should last between 5,000 and 10,000 hours, with how often it is switched on and off and how hard it is driven being major factors.

If you are going to be limited to half hour sessions I would go with a solid state amp.

Between the Powercolor HDX and Asus Xonar STX I would go with the STX, even though there is a large cost differential. The STX has one major advantage over the HDX, it is very well built with top line components and so is extremely reliable - the HDX is having too many problems for my liking.

The STX has an excellent DAC, which is just as good as the Modi and will supply the BHC with a nice clean signal.

It does not play music to your ears, it merely conveys an electrical signal to the headphones and it is they that play music to your ears - as long as there is good conduction with negligible impedance and capacitance, one will sound the same as any other.

Somehow I (and many, many others) think that we are never going to agree on this.

ps. significance is also relative to any delusions one may be experiencing :p

Not sure whether anyone here would understand but if anyone here have looked into the neuromechanics of the mammalian brain, one would understand how minute our understanding on our own perception is.

What you point out, is somewhat accurate, but it is merely based around classical physics, which does not fit well in signal transduction, especially in the neurocircuitry of a mammalian brain.

Even a wildly accepted property of black hole has been disproved lately, it simply shows that no scientific definition of the world we live in is fluid.

So what I'm trying to say is, no need to get out of your way to define individuals other than yourself. Nor is there a need to give a definite answer for something that one is not an expert in.

P.S. I think you were meant to say, significance is also relative to one's perception. But the more focused on one perception, the further away you are from the truth.

Bottom line: If one could not hear a difference, then enjoy, that's what music are meant to be :p

and throwing a lot of big words at something does not make it true. ;)

What does signal transduction or mammalian brains have to do with cables? It's the headphone driver that acts as the transducer, all the cable has to do is supply it with a clean, undistorted and non-degraded signal and you don't need to spend a fortune in order to do that.

If you want to spend lots of money on headphones then fair enough, that makes sense as they are the device that actually interfaces with our brains, so getting the best ones we can find is the best way to improve audio quality.

Having expensive cables can enhance your musical enjoyment because simply having them in place can increase your expectations and because you believe they will make a difference your brain tells you that they indeed do. However, this does not mean that they make the slightest difference in physical terms. Once you are at a certain level of performance, which you can achieve with well built but relatively cheap cables, there is no physical benefit to over engineering them. Any audible improvements are merely placebo and expectation bias.

So I'm listening to the Vali 2...

I'm trying to figure out why it's only £150. This thing sounds as good as I remember the Crack sounding. It sounds better than the Ember but isn't as powerful. it's very effortless sounding, isn't as aggressive as Schiit's other products.

I've gotta spend a good few weeks to wrap myself around this buy after a day I can say it's very very good. The guys over SuperbestAudiofriends think the Vali 2 isn't very tubey but I disagree. You can tell it's tubes but it isn't like the chinese tube amps which are a little gooey and lush. This amp is spacious, holographic and has a slight lingering quality to it that makes things a tad lush but it's very refined and the detail is great.

Back to listening :D
