Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

wow, super human ears over here!

Since there doesn't appear to be any conclusive proof under any scientific DBT that Au makes any difference over the equivalent Cu cable? I think you could make money (possibly life changing) if cable manufacturers could find someone with truly golden ears that held up to scrutiny.

I'd be fascinated too, I might be skeptical, but honestly if there is evidence I am always willing to be swayed.

OT, I keep auditioning the HD650's since a few friends have them, it keeps making me want to upgrade my DT770's, but I need something office friendly, and at my usual listening volumes that definitely means closed.. I did audition the Momentum 2 Over ears yesterday and actually quite liked them, a complete different signature to the 650's from memory.

It does not play music to your ears, it merely conveys an electrical signal to the headphones and it is they that play music to your ears - as long as there is good conduction with negligible impedance and capacitance, one will sound the same as any other.

Somehow I (and many, many others) think that we are never going to agree on this.

ps. significance is also relative to any delusions one may be experiencing :p

Yeah some amplifiers can be susceptible to issues with a capacitive load/parasitics - the difference in capacitance between 2 cables could be enough to make a difference to how the amplifier sounds its the only way I could imagine someone could tell the difference between 2 good quality cables in blind testing.

With ultra high end equipment in an isolated listening environment I guess Johnston noise could become a factor (maybe?) but I'd imagine that would be more on the input side of the amp than the output cabling.

Momentums have a fun sound I really like mine but I wouldn't want them as my only set of headphones the sound reproduction is a bit gimmicky and can become fatiguing compared to headphones with a more natural response. I've never heard another set of headphones that can do the bass coming at you like a freight train trick they do but seems to come at some expense to the mid-range.

I found them at a reasonable price online so thought I'd try a pair since they are quite different to my current DT770's.. At some point I'll start spending a bit more, but I've found headphones tricky to find good places to audition and also they are all very very different and my ears like a bit of excitement at times, and smoothness at others..

Make sure to use the right cable for your device - I was using the 4 pole one as it looked nicer but ruined sound quality due to not quite sitting right in a device not designed for it.

Nah never! I think it's ******** lol

I've found differences between cables but it's mainly down to cable noise, poorly made cables, high resistances and all that rubbish. If I buy a cable it's purely to please my semi-materialistic tendencies.
