Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

Haha yeah I agree, It also is huge! I had to shift all my consoles over to make room, my god though! the sound it produces.

Awesome! make sure you share impressions when it arrives! and photos! Val2 is gorgeous.

Looks like ordering from the USA is the best option. What are resale values like assuming I end up not finding it offering much over the HP amp on the 7050? It would appear on casual glance that they are rather popular anyway so I should not lose much money at all. I don't fancy shipping it back to the USA you see.

Edit*
Found the correct EU site :D

No trouble reselling at all. Ah that's good, saves waiting for customs! Did you get another cable sorted? I'm looking into getting a nice chunky, custom cable.
Have you tried the solid stater Schiit stuff like the Asgard? I don't think I want to faff about with tubes, but I've never experienced them so don't know how different the sound is between the Schiit SS and tube stuff.

While I love their Vali and Val2, I'm not the biggest fan of the Schiit house sound which tends to be a little rough, dry a bit less musical than I usually like(Val2 is smoother, more hifi, refined and doesn't really fit this category and so does the Vali). All are technically very good though and this is just a sound preference on my side.

Asgard 2 reminds me of a more refined magni, a bit warmer, bit more musical, I'd say it's somewhere between the Magni and Vali in tone.

I think the Vali is their best model outside of the Val. With the vali, the tubes are not roll-able so you don't have to worry about tube rolling and it's very small.

Harshness is a result of peaks, exaggeration in the response, distortion or a combination of those.

There's no such thing as a pure sounding headphone, amp, dac. When it comes to neutrality, the most recommended equipment for it is always on the warmer side rather than the colder side and I agree that warmth is natural..

When I look for something natural, it must never sound out of place, coherency, tonality, how human voices sound, if I hear harshness then it's a result of one of the above I mention or all of them. Buttery smoothness is something I enjoy because it's euphoric, relaxing, intimate but buttery smooth can also be natural. There's too many headphones, amps that focus on extracting detail at the expensive of peaks in the response causing harshness/roughness and so many enthusiast have it in their head that this is neutral.

If something sounded dead flat, it would bore most to tears I imagine but it's impossible to achieve that. I believe warmth is reality. I guess it's a personal thing so what I believe to be natural may be way off what you believe.

Yeah I'm the same. If I have closed back I have the have them slightly U shaped with an airy treble otherwise things get congested. Really like the Shure 1540 and NAD HP50 though!

I used to own the SR60i, crazy headphones!

I've never seen fakes. I would think they would be very difficult to fake, if you know the 650 inside out parts would be different.

I've had stickers on each side, many on other forums complained about different stickers, it's no biggy. I've also had some that sounded leaner, bit bright or rough like my current pairs but they both sound back to normal. Just switch the ear pads to confirm.

Don't worry yours are fine :)

I'm debating sticking with the Mojo. It's not a true bypass I found out from Chord which has put a spanner in my plans. I quite enjoy the Mojo sound.

I can't find NADs power rating anywhere but I did find some comments stating the D1050 puts 1W into 32ohm(not officially confirmed though) so 200-300mw wouldn't surprise me and that's more than enough. 650 does better with sound matching rather than immense power. If you enjoy the NAD sound then it's not a loss :)

Yeah in exactly the same I'll sit there for ages trying to decide! I can't be bothered to get another DAC then send that to the Crack. Crack is £350 and another DAC on the Mojos level would be about a grand. I might as well just get the LCD-2(Cherry picked of course ;p)and use them with my 650's out of the Mojo. I get the sub bass I need and the mids I need.

I've now found some post by Chord and other people saying the Mojo can actually be used as just a DAC only..WTF I swear no one actually knows!

See if NAD will give you the give you the numbers Mrk.

Done!

Is that good? I genuinely have no idea.

If I didn't know any better I'd say it was a tube amp looking at those numbers. They look weird to me, maybe that's normal for NAD's products though!

Regardless 300mw into 300ohm is more than enough! The Botthead Crack puts in 330mw. As long as it sounds good to your ears, you are powering them pretty soundly! :):)

Bottle Head Crack ordered!

By the way guys, I'm going away from forums for a bit. I've got a lot of stuff to sort out in my personal life and I also need to get away from the internet! I've quit all the other forums I'm apart of but keeping this one as it's an awesome site! Prob be back sometime in the summer!

Speak soon! and keep rocking those 650's :)

Argh doing some PC research has bought me out of my slumber early for a few weeks so hello!

I'm looking into getting a good gaming PC and don't have a single clue about all these parts so It's looking like I've got a lot to research!

Seeing that cat sitting in the 650 box just gives me nightmares!

I've always wanted one and being strictly a console gamer it all is pretty daunting. I've read it's better to build one but it all look so time consuming and would rather just buy one from here but as I research building might end up being easier than I thought, hopefully.

So intel is the way to go huh? I've read AMD is good for budget PC's but mid range and up intel is better for gaming but that's just one website so don't know how reliable that information is.

Ah cool intel it shall be! it's good to know that there's some longevity with them, that's a factor for me.

Is there any good gaming PC's on here that are good for around 600-700? Maybe 800 at a push.

The Schiit Vali is one of the best matches for the HD650 I can think of outside the Valhalla 2 and Crack. The Vali isn't a rolled off, I've seen comments saying this but I personally don't hear it this way. I'd describe it as quite natural with a bit of an exciting character.

If you want them to "open up" then you need to be looking at things like the Val2, Crack which are more resolving.
