Got it last week and didn't notice. :o

hey, hey, certifikats 'r us...
grats all, but I don't want to be left out:

also sorry edge, but I feel the TBag, Reaver and loudbob breathing down my neck- I'm sure you do too! Hope the 480 helps hold em off :)

Lol well done Grimgoth another biggy, with all these tiffys and upgrades am thinking the next team stomp will come sooner than estimated, no doubt about it this team just goes from strength to strength :D:D

Nothing is going to hold off toxic, but Im more annoyed with you :D as I spent quite a large sum to get rid of that upgrade itch, and now you have bought that 295, that itch has come back
I can't do anything about it now, but all that money for approx 6hrs of thinking - "Im so gonna stomp Grimgoth, he will never know whats hit him"

Oh well...

I'd reccomend derbac for the itching edge - but you realise this particular itch is incurable dont you :)
I have mentioned a few times how am not happy with airflow in these 800d cases, have read umpteen forum guides and countless well intended comments all to no avail.
While they were ok with 1 or 2 gpu's 3 and its a belly full of hellfire. Have the usual 3 top fans exhausting a push pull h5o incoming as temps were lower that way and the bog standard 140mm cool air intake above psu bay.
In idle its 36 ish full load crunching 68-70, forget even putting the overclock on it shoots to 90 in a heartbeat!
So guess my question is this, would you guys go for a case with improved airflow(was thinking haf x with that sweet 200mm side panel intake fan and 2 top 200mm fans) and flog the 800d's or..... go the whole 9 yards and watercool the lot. Now if i watercooled the lot including cpu what temps do you reckon i could get on 3 x 480's and would i be able to finally put my overclock on, last but not least which scenario would benefit the crunching most.
I have had the sides of these cases for 4 weeks now and the noise is starting to get at me.....any thoughts or advice much appreciated as allways.:)

Then I would say you are OK
Im at 65 and 72 for my two gpu's and that is in an air conditioned room - fans are at 80% and 85%
Watercooling is the only way you will get a silent-ish machine, but it is expensive when you take the gpu blocks into account and you have to buy new blocks everytime you upgrade which adds to the expense..

Trouble is with the sides off for a prolonged period, you're gonna accumulate a lot of crud inside your case which will eventually tell in terms of temps.....

Quiet cooling on a budget is what has stopped me looking seriously at the Fermi route. I just can't afford all the gubbins without saving for quite a while. Is it worth trying one of the after-market coolers that are starting to appear for the 400 series cards?

Yeah this is true....am going to mull it over tonight but i dont think i can stand it with the sides off any more, its not overly noisy just irritating and when i'm irritated i cant let go till its solved

Aftermarket coolers...good idea but all slots are used and the aftermarket coolers i have seen seem to be edging towards a 3 slot requirement, am going to brave the temps and put the case side on the 470 rig and see just how hot it gets, if it does get sizzling and gpu tasks start slowing i might try the haf x case on it and if that case doesn't give better airflow will flog the lot and get the pro's to do it next time :)

ok 15 minute test
Before
3 x 470 77 66 59 cpu 69
3 x 480 73 66 60 cpu 69
After
3x 470 83 70 65 cpu 69
3x 480 83 75 71 cpu 66
Does not look to bad on the face of it but i get kinda twitchy when gpu's go over 70 am i being greedy or is there room for improvement there?

70c is fine
I've just got my 470 yesterday and, well i see what people are talking about tbh with the heat and that, its really quiet just sitting doing nothing but as soon as i started folding the temps just went up up up up all the way to 92c then the fan go's to like 100% Im now deaf:( thankfully I've got a water block on the way :D
My 9800GT runs cooler tho atm its just over 80c

I know what you mean about the size of the coolers - mine are big enough (and that's just for 280's). A 4 slot card turns into a two slot jobbie with mine, although they have dropped my temps 15 degrees on the GPUs and they are very quiet. The other problem with them is that they don't exhaust heat out of the case, so you do need good airflow through the case to compensate - otherwise it will turn into an oven - probably lunching your north and south bridges, along with your memory  !!!!!

I don't know that there is a sensible solution with just air for the amount of heat your cards will be chucking out; you may well just have to bite the bullet and go for water.;)

Have you got TThrottle installed and running - just in case things get out of hand?

rofl. Am sure it was more than 6 hours. think of all that fun time plotting revenge (plotting is more fun than executing if you ask me)
besides, its still a bit too hot or something methinks- both my main crunchers hung early in the day today.... no clue why :(

You will get improvement with better airflow, but those temps are fine - fermi is rated upto 105C  - not that Id ever suggest you run it that hot.

Revenge will have to wait, that was the last of my cash and now we will be saving for xmas. It really was only 6hrs or so, I had it installed fri afternoon and went round with a smile on my face muttering "stomp that slacker" and then you posted in the evening and I went round with a frown thinking "**** that slacker!" :D
Its good for the team, but foiled again in my dastardly plans...

Thanks for the input peeps, i left the sides on overnight temps peaked at 87 for the gpu's the cpu was constant 69-71. Gpu tasks slowed from 2 per 19mins to around 22 mins, took the sides back of this morning temps dropped by 10 in less than a minute and tasks quickened.
That TThrottle sounds interesting Area51 but i am edging towards water.
Cheers Edge i realise they are rated higher than i have them but stuff just slows down....and i dont like slow lol, look on the bright side you have plenty of time now to plot your next move. If you had not upgraded at all Mr Grimgoth might have streamed ahead as it is you can still gain i think.
Am going to take a walk out with the mutt and decide whats what, i think i might forfeit the holiday in favour of water cooling.

If you can time it right with the weather a week away with no IT worries in Scotland will do you the world of good Toxic - once the next 6 weeks are over the temp will start to cool going into autumn and then it wont be such an issue and you can buy some time while you save/make up your mind over what you want to do

go on holiday mate - you've spent enough on IT this year..
