SETI@home News Vol. 111 (23/07/2010)

Your very keen today sah! Is your new gpu in full flow? :)

Its not new - its about fourth hand I think (judging by the amount of crap insdie it)!!! But yes, its been chucking things out all week along with its buddy :). Looking forward to seeing how much of an impact it makes towards my target RAC (which now seems to be a figure that only has meaning on Modays now)!

Not really related, but some observations...
Since adding my extra card (I have gone from a 470 to 1 x 470 and a 480) I have noticed a general slowdown in completion times
Originally on the 470 I was getting completion times of 6mins and 12 mins when running 1 wu on a card.
Moving to 3 wu's on the 470 gave me around 17 min completion which slowly moved out to 23-25 mins..
Now with the 480 in there, I have completion times on some units moving out to 28-30 mins with an average of around 26 mins now, though some seem to complete a bit quicker.
Weirdly the 480 is running 10C cooler than my 470, but the 470 is oc'd to 748Mhz and the 480 is at stock as I cant get any sort of stable overclock on it and I dont fancy increasing the volts.
Original temps were around the 60C mark for the 470, but that has climbed to 74C since adding the 480 as that beast vents air into the case.
I dropped the mac_cpu value down to 0.1 from 0.2 as that was costing me a cpu, haven't noticed any slowdown yet.
Its a while off, but I will have to be careful planning my next upgrade as whatever gpu I buy will be slotting into pci-e slot 2 or 3 which will obviously affect temps inside the case. All this and this rig is in an air conditioned room stable at 22C

Not moaning as I have finally lost my dual gpu set-up cherry :p First time I've ever had 2 gpu's in one machine and upto now, my most expensive gpu purchase ever was a brand new 8800GT when they first came out, I think I paid 170 quid
Toxic/Halz - what have you started? :D

edit - my pending hit 407000 - but is coming back down now - should be a good week for the team :D

Well Toxic, your output really is impressive - 90k RAC  How are you temperature woes?

Not to bad at the moment mind you it has been cooler last few days, i think its helped taking out a gpu and putting it in a rig on its own. Which has kindof defeated teh object i wanted to go down to 2 but hey ho, windows are open 24-7 which helps, roll on winter!!:D

Feel bad for you Edge it sure is a pain in the butt getting things to their sweet point, have you tried knocking down from 3 to 2 tasks on the 470 and 1450 on the 480 and 2 tasks...seems to be about the best scenario for me :(

Don't feel bad - its a good problem to have :p It's just going to take a while to work out what the best set up is, 2 or 3 wu's per card...

Same here - was it good for you???????? :)
It was very good and Im sure the whole experience will get better as the weeks go on and my RAC starts to climb...

I've tried to hammer it out in my mind wether 2 or 3 wu's per gpu, on the face of it a single wu on 470 12 mins 480 9mins average 2 wu's 0n 470 17-18 etc. Obviously it looks better and its making better use of the gpu itself but how the heck do you look at the results and make head or tails of it.
When i used to run 1 wu it would be around 9 mins and on average i would get 120-150 credit now its more like half that.
I guess the only way to find out for sure is to do a test, week after next for the 3 day outage i will crunch 1 wu per gpu ok i risk lower credit but would like to know for sure, and the week after outage will do 2 etc and see if i can come to any conlusions. Thats why i want a test rig Edge for situations like this.....am scouring mm and bay this weekend.
Figured out why was having no joy on mm, chap messaged me and kindly informed me no one would touch me with a bargepole because my trust was so low, even 24000 positives on bay wouldn't help me here he says :(

I don't think thats right, a quick snoop on there shows most don't have that many entries in the trust.

Anyway I do still want the PSU, so if you PM me with where you want me to pick it up and what colour carnation I should wear I'll even consider adding another plus for your trust if I get back from the smog in one piece.:D

How do you check your trust rating - didn't know about that...

Toxic, Im gonna leave it two for now and then next outage I will up it to 3 per wu and see if there is any improvement. The thing is - its hard to tell with anything at the moment as the stats are so screwed from the outage

I'm trying to understand glops/pflops/dcf :(

I consider myself sort of, semi-intelligent - but I can't figure it out! I set my dcf manually to 1 earlier today - its now back at over 3! I apparently have 49 days of work in my cache :eek::eek::eek: I know this is going to play a big role in the quota system when they turn it back on for us anonymous users, and wanted to get ahead of the game - but alas

 49 days you hog!!!;) I dont think its honestly worth messing with i never touched mine and i still seem to get a fair whack of work - wouldn't know how to anyway - ignorance is sometimes bliss :)

Considering an ap task was estimated at 30 days ..... these numbers are useless! I'm not concerned for managing the cache, as I know roughly what i can do per day (on an average basis). I'm a serial meddler!!! :D

Serial meddler yup i can identify with that. Talking of meddling/modding and generally messing around with a system thats working perfectly well without my help what, whom or where would you all reccomend for serious case modding and parts etc.
Few months ago Mr Halz sah stuck a pic up and said don't let toxic see that, well someones gone and done the same thing, i believe you were admiring it earlier Area51. Apart from the fact its wholescale wu vandalism the fact his gpu's are erroring every task the layout looks appealing, i have a dremmel and i'm not afraid to use it :D
Just scroll down past Terry Thomas and with a bit more structure and a set of castors i might have a bash myself :)

I would probably start with chilledpc. Looks like they can do most things...... :)

As for a starting point case-wise, you may have to start with some server hardware (although I'm not familiar with the full range of 'normal' PC cases around that would have sufficient room inside to mount the GPUs away from the motherboard). The alternative is to get a custom case made - which probably would'nt be as expensive ass it sounds!

Riser cards are available here: http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=10865, although you should check that these can supply enough power for your GPUs! ;)
