SETI@home News Vol. 113 (22/08/2010)

The fun is only just beginning :D

Hopefully you won't have any HDD issues like I did.

Took me hours to get a stable windows install (after 3 hdd's and numerous bios settings).

And I still don't know how I did it............................

Sleep.....need sleep.....no doubt my daughter will be waking me in about 5 hours :D

It's tense and nerve wracking.....but my crackey its addictive!!
I cant connect both molex on the mobo, am using a 6 pin from psu to molex female(oooerrr) thats that one, but i have not got the right combination of cables to connect the other sigh i need a male to male if you know what i mean argghhhhhh!

Theres only one logical way to sort this, am not so sure i would need the two but the book says to use em when using multiple gpu to boost the power.
So its a choice of which one to connect and prey it works ok.....Bottom or middle molex feel free to vote :D

I don't want to push you to more expense, but.......

After much investigation I have come to the conclusion that the Asus Rampage Extreme III deserves nothing less than the Silverstone Strider 1500w Power Supply. It has all the connections you need and can power 4 GTX470's.

Yeah you do.....it's 3.50am and your preying on my weakness for new shiny things lol :D
No this power supply will do all 4 gpu's and no doubt i am approaching the problem from the wrong angle, i shall take an extended t break and come back refreshed:rolleyes:
I'll be happy to get it working by 8am set uploads away then zzzzzzz :)

:D Sarky sod :p:D
No pain no gain right....and with the added incentive of having your goodself looking over my shoulder i better make sure i get it done or i shall be wearing the cone of shame :(
.....another union t break

**Day shift clocking in**

With all the talk of pending finally coming down I'd be interested to hear how old everyone's oldest pending result is. Cake and sparklies for the oldest?:p

I'll start. I've got one from April 23, its had 4 wingmen variously erroring, aborting and timing out etc, the current one has a deadline of 11 sept but looking at the host it doesn't look very likely to make it.

Morning all - sounds like it's been a busy night..

27th Feb is my oldest - it is on it's 5th wingman and due back on the 9th sept!

My next oldest one is 7th May..

They have definately sorted something out as my RAC is at 48K - my highest ever, and my pending is down to 446,824.35

Well done Marine - its good to hear your rig is finally behaving itself - sit back and enjoy the climb up the table

Well done Toxic on the build, get them uploads started, we need your credit dump before TheTross does this weeks team news :-)

I think pretty much any 1500W PSU will do the 4 gpu's but cables are a problem for me - I have the Xigmatek 1500W PSU, the one that blew up on Biffa.
Plenty of cables with it, but each gpu cable comes with an 8 pin and a 6 pin connector, and if you buy say 4 x 470's you will end up using molex convertors as you will run out of 6 pin adapters..

This might be the shortest stomp in history, as the really big credit dumps have yet to go through for everyone, but...

ReaverUK - get back down that ladder of scientific progress s'ah - you have been stomped :p

Short and sweet as Im sure I will be slipping from 12th sometime this weekend,so Im gonna live out of my rucksack as it will be musical cells over the next 72 hrs.
Toxic, if you can manage 500K, you might get me...
As might you loudbob...

I should end up back in cell 14 if I have worked everything out right...

:D Musical cells, i'm not even going to look it will give me a headache.

Well i must admit i've bought enough hardware since i joined in feb/march to feel qualified in making a complaint to ocuk.

I won't bore everyone with the details but most of you have been witness to my disasters and i think enough is enough, am tired of paying full whack for things and not getting what i pay for.
It started with my first order and multiple instances of, marked cases, dodgy ssd, 6 pics to show the extent of the last case hassle. Ok i must admit i did fair better this time, 1 out of 2 ramp 3 boards do work.

Theres a known issue with insufficient compound on the chipsets giving a i.o.h error (temperatures rocket to 99 degrees within a minute of boot upthen auto shutdown).
A lot of people like myself with the second board dont want to get caught in an endless rma loop. Demand seems to exceed supply so there will be a wait for a replacement, there again some people have been removing the heat pipe assembly and appling a better thermal paste, but there in lies the problem - warranty would be void instantly.
Have made the call and will be calling back monday afraid i am not going to let it rest. So by all means you can all jump on me for being a whinger but how am i supposed to carry on contributing to the team when i upgrade or try to better myself if i get problems like this??
After the learning curve i was hoping it would be a little bit more relaxed but i keep getting held back by what seems to be in most cases either poor quality control as in marked/damaged goods, or hardware faults that are not of my own making.
Hopefully there will be some management about monday and spie might be around fingers crossed something good comes from this and not more game vouchers :mad::mad:
