SETI@Home News Vol. 125 9th - 15th April 2011

:D Yeah right ho lol. I say Mr Meridian is really chucking out the wu's am thinking i need to do a car boot or something, these gpu's are taking forever to even out.
How is Mr Reaver this fine sunday morning?

Can't really complain ( well i can but no one listens ) stuck @ work all night so it could be better ;).
I keep thinking i should change out the 295's for something more 'power friendly' but they chuck out a decent enough credit for the age and usage i've got out of them

True they are still a great card for seti. Am not waving my ewilly but i took the plunge on a gtx580 and when they say they run cool they mean it and so much quieter too. I assume the gtx 570 has the same vapour chamber cooling and what an improvement over the 480's, i can hear myself think again...well ok ramble incoherently but you get the idea.
There'll still be people waiting to bite your hand off for them, or even a few 1gb 460 oc ones cheap as chips mmmmm :)

580 on air 900/1800/2074 65% fan and 68 degrees pumps out 2 work units in just under 12 minutes and you cannot hear it over case fans :)

**you have a job thats what counts sah**

Cheers as always for the news Toxic - sterling job s'ah..

Reaver - if you want new GPU's go for it, but if you look at the stats for the largest producing hosts, you will see the 295's are still more than holding their own still..

Good luck with the sleep Marine..

Your welcome Mr Edge sah :)

Now i know there have been reports of the gtx 590 going pop which i think is down to driver issues. Given that the 580 will take time to settle in and show its colours rac wise how do you reckon a 590 would fair?
Given a 580 is around £400 and a 590 £550-£600 but is not the greatest for overclocking is it even worth considering do you think?
Not that i can afford one just yet (am still on egg n chips from the last purchase) would be interested to hear what people think :)
Cheers peeps :)

Yeah i know what you mean i am more than happy with them production wise its just that i know with other cards the electric usage will be lower. OK only slightly lower but you get the idea.
In all honesty even if i did replace them the total cost over the short term would be significantly more than i would save in anything but the long term  guess its just itchy fingers :p maybe time to watercool :confused::eek: and crank the clocks. As an added bonus to the extra RAC i could get back to a quiet(er) living room if they were under water ;) its just the thought of water in the case puts the fear of God into me :p

Sounds like an awfull lot of work watercooling 3 x 295's you would still have to watercool the gubbins but if money was ok i would suggest a waterchiller, thats my next task.

He he :D
