For cheese on toast you are right in that the cheese should be sliced, for cheese on your beans and toast it should be grated.
No all grilled cheese should be planed never sliced or grated.

Settle an argument for me. Me and Andrew Moore were discussing the virtues of Cheese and Beans on Toast this afternoon. I go for the tried and tested method of Toast, then Cheese, Melt Cheese then put beans on top.
He goes for Toast, Beans then cheese on top then back under the grill. Quite obviously, he is a not right but which is the best way to do it??
I am thinking if you put the beans under the grill you are going to end up with burnt beans.
Your mistake was to introduce beans in the first place.
Never had cheesy beans![]()

Cheese on top!
I would say that beans are in fact a fundamental requirement for Cheese and Beans on Toast...
Put the beans in a pan, add brown sauce, sweet chilli sauce, cheese, black pepper and a dash of ketchup. Pour onto 2 slices of generously buttered thick toast, sprinkle more grated cheese on and then devour.
Do not knock it until you've tried it, it's absolute win.
Noted down*, got a bit of sweet chilli sauce left and a lot of brown sauce.
Will come back to you.
I just have toast, beans then put the cheese on last.
Then let the heat melt it. No burnt beans, and lovely melted cheese![]()
