Several publishers trying to avoid making SP content!

I’m in mid 30’s and have never played a game in my life with a great story and that includes last of us, mass effect, bio shock etc

They may be good by video game standards but that’s not saying much...

Maybe in twenty years time when technology has improved and I can actually watch a cut scene and not cringe at the lip sync and uncanny valley vibes... then I’ll start to be able to take video game stories seriously but as it stands they are pretty weak form of storytelling imo... especially if the subject matter is trying to be serious.

How can you say that TLOU didn't have a great story? you sound extremely hard to please.

The thing people need to remember, is the AAA developers/producers are a handful from an ocean of developers. So content for SP games will never 'dry' up. It just won't be huge budgeted games like they once were.

Sounds like you have confused video games with movies. Do you also complain that books are rubbish because the visuals are crap?

Horizon Zero Dawn doesn't have great animation, but is still one the best sci-fi stories I experienced this year. Some you get from the dialogue, some from areas like Cauldrons, some from audio logs, some from cut scenes....it all comes together. It's a different medium to film, better in many ways.

No, because books aren’t visual entertainment thus your point is kind of moronic. How am I meant to feel emotional connection with weird uncanny valley looking video game characters with dodgy lip sync... it’s make every cut scene incredibly hard to take seriously.

It's called suspension of disbelief....it's kinda essential to enjoying most creative mediums.

The idea that if a visual medium isnt 100% photo realistic then it can't tell a serious story is utterly ridiculous.

Watching video games characters is the same as watching bad acting. If the characters aren’t convincing what the hell do I care about the storyline. You can have a decent voice actor but so long as it looks likes some awkward video game with jarg lip sync and amusingly awkward facial animations it’s impossible for me to take it seriously.

I’d suggest we stop discussing this and there is no way anyone’s ever coming close to convincing me that storytelling in video games is good, I think it’s a fundamentally poor medium for serious story telling. You can think otherwise, it’s fine.

Charming.

It's a pity really, because were you willing to be more open-minded towards the medium and what can be achieved with it you'd get a lot enjoyment more from the games you play. I've been engrossed in the storylines of games that didn't even have lip sync or facial animation e.g. Metal Gear Solid. Games offer an immersion into the narratives and characters that books, TV, film etc can never come close to.

Lol at trying to make out what you quoted was somehow rude. All I did was tell someone to not bother wasting their time trying to convince me otherwise. CHARMING.

Nah, it's not.

You get to play what you like, I get to play what I like. No sadness, no pity... just people enjoying what they like and avoiding what they don't like.

Calm down mate, I know it's Sunday, hung over? Stick on a nice game with a decent story and relax for the day.

Lol, I can't remember the last time I've seen a movie with a decent story, let alone a story that would rival those of some brilliant games.

By your standards, 2-3h movies are also a poor medium for storytelling since they're too short to even establish an emotional connection with a given character, not to mention most actors can't act for **** so they're no better than those poorly animated models you complain about.

I also wonder what you consider a good story "by video game standards". A good story is a good story, you're mixing presentation and visual impact with the actual plot. Besides, the idea that you can't enjoy a story unless it's presented 100% realistically borders on preposterous. There are definitely some nice movie stories but they're nothing above the best game plots.

It seemed more like you were trying to shut-down the conversation because all you can do is repeat the same thing three times over and brand someone's argument moronic. If someone's willing to have a relatively civilised discussion with you on the internet (a rarity these days), effectively telling them to sod-off and not bother tends to come across as a bit rude.

Well I was trying to shut it down, not the actual thread... just the specific conversation with the guy who quoted me because ultimately he's wasting his time trying to convince me otherwise. I can't get immersed into any video game story, I feel no emotional connection to anyone in the games for the reasons I've previously mentioned. It's not like im alone in this viewpoint, it's a criticism which has long been levelled at video games. I'll take film, tv and books over video games all day long for storytelling and thats the case for lots of people I know.

If others enjoy and rate the stories then thats fine

What is your favourite game?

It's horses for courses, I'm the polar opposite of insideline. These days nothing puts me off more than the repetitive grind of the same thing over and over again with the sole aim of "beating someone else", especially so when that someone else is likely to dump 100x more hours into the game than I can spare and also the pay to win games you see where people will drop £100s to get the best gear.

I much prefer single player gaming, at my own leisure, in my own time, at my own difficulty.

When I was 18, I lived for the online competition and sank 4 or 5 hours a day into Wolfenstein online. Today, I doubt I'd last more than an hour before it annoyed me enough to turn it off.

I dipped my toe back in with FIFA 18 and very quickly remembered why I don't bother.

I game for enjoyment, not for winning. For others I suppose those are one and the same thing.

Is this the bit where I post a game and you tell me it's crap ? It's a traap !

Seriously though, probably iRacing or first ever Rainbow Six.
Just trying to get where you are coming from!

Skill based games then. Not story based.

Now I'm trying to think of the last "best" story driven game lol... The original Halo I think.

Well. Max Payne 2. Yep Max Payne 2.
