Sharing a Folder on my Server over the internet

Doesn't the share need to be synced both ways with bit torrent sync...what happens when you delete the photos on your phone? Does it delete them off your server ?

Like Dropbox?

I need to be able to copy a file from PC to server...not sync directories both ways...I understand that bit torrent sync as a toggle for sync all off...but this still means when I delete of PC it will delete off server...

Not as far as i know though i freely admit i only have ever used it for the odd file here and there. AFAIK it only deletes things if you delete the original share.

IE if you set up a folder with pictures in it on your PC (the original share source) and downloaded to your phone, if you then delete from the phone they stay on the PC, if you deleted from the PC though the phone obviously loses them also as it has nothing any longer to sync with.)
This may have changed in the latest version though and it may now allow deletion from both ends. The easy way around that is do not delete stuff from any device you share it to.

When you delete from Dropbox you can still get it back after a year. So still on Dropbox server..

Not with a 7TB video directory...I can't sync that sever folder with any old pc.

Not sure what you mean Bit torrent sync has no file size limitations, you can share files twice that size.

If your storage on some devices is FAT based and will not allow above 2 or 4GB files thats another problem entirely.

I mean I don't want to sync anything.

I want to copy a file from a PC to my server. Then delete it from the PC. Leaving it on the server.

I don't have 7TB on my work laptop for example.

Looking at it, I think either an FTP server from your home would be a solution. Obviously then you'd need to ensure that FTP isn't blocked on the remote machines you are using.
-or-
The VPN would still be viable. Did you mention what router you had BTW?

If you are planning on copying/syncing/regularly accessing/etc 7TB anywhere, over a basic interent connection in a single sitting i wish you the best of luck with that.

Bit torrent sync or FTP would still be the best solution, oh and do not forget to have a look at file checksums after.

Unless you have a serious home connection and serious work connection doing this over the internet is probably the hardway. A 20Mb upload at either end is NOT going to be fun.

Me personally i would back it up (make a copy locally) either onto a couple of 4TB HDDs or a http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/products/enterprise-servers-storage/nearline-storage/archive-hdd/ shove those in a USB 3 enclosure and take them to the remote location instead. You do not have to worry if one copy gets screwed up that way either.

I think I'm being misunderstood.

I don't want to sync anything. I just want to copy a file to home server..Thats pretty much it.

Bittorrent syncs files..I don't want that, I want a one direction copy of an AVCHD file from PC to server then delete the AVCHD file from PC leaving it on server.

In that case i would just FTP the file over if you are dead set on doing it over a connection, though if its 7TB worth i hope you have a quick connection both ends. Id personally stil go the HDD in an enclosure route and just take that to whatever machine you want the file on.

If it is a 7TB file or a combo of 7TB worth of files then on a normal connection (in fact a good one for a home user) with 20Mb upload that is going to take you over 750 hours to transfer.

Even on a connection with 100Mb you are still talking over 150 hours to transfer it. A 1Gbps connection will still take 15+ hours.

If any errors occur during that time at best the transferred video file will have the odd glitch and at worse not playback at all, so may be worth making a note of the files SHA1/MD5 sums before you transfer it then check it matches after the transfer before deleting the file/files from anywhere.

Mate the whole directory on the server is around 7tb the files range from 4gb to 8gb... That I want to copy :)

Honestly i dont think you need a VPN if your going to use SFTP. Just use the built in windows SFTP server with https://winscp.net/eng/docs/free_sftp_client_for_windows on the client.
As long as you use a strong password and certificates for the security exchange you will be fine. People can try and access it but you can set it up to ban them after 5 bad tries.

I'll look into...the easiest thing at the mo is looking at team viewer file transfer...

Filezilla is also quite easy to setup as SFTP ive used it before :) It can be run both as a client and server.

Not sure about teamviewer? Does it go through their servers?

Id seriously look at how much of that 7TB directory you want to copy first, even if you just wanted 3.5TB (or half the files) thats still 7.5 hours on a 1Gbps connection. If you have access to both systems it will be a hell of a lot easier, quicker and more reliabe to plug a physical drive in and do things that way.

I don't want to copy any of the 7TB...

The 7TB directly is already on the server.

The files I want to copy to the server are around 4GB to 8GB in size.

Just chuck em on a USB stick and take that to it then. I would not bother messing about especially regularly with files which are even several GB in size remotely if you have access to both systems.

On a 20Mb connection its still going to take you about 50mins to 1hour per 8GB file to transfer.

Chuck em on a USB drive, copy or do whatever you want with the files on which systems you want, set up a DDNS on both machines if you wish see you can remotely stream/watch/access the content if you wish and be done with it.
