Shotguns: Show us your clay / game / zombie bashers

Apparently you can't remove stuff like that -- everything is logged and taken into account, even if it's technically 'spent'.

Did you take the drift about taking a larger gun cabinet? :-)

Hah, small world! Yes, I'm looking online at all the various ones available.

Are the breakdown cabinets any good, or do you just end up wishing you bought a full size cabinet?

Yeah, breakdown is a bad idea unless you REALLY have no space at all. Breakdown means twice as many chance of bumping the guns in/out!

Thought as much.

I don't suppose I'll actually buy a cabinet before the year is up. This'll give me plenty of time to make my mind up on which one I want, and try and find a good price.

I also need to work out what sort of shotgun I want and then whether I can responsibly afford it :p

Have you been shooting at a local club yet? Try to find a clay club that have a gunroom, and try stuff!

In my experience the 'first' gun fit isn't the final one, so there's really no reason to invest too much to start with... I know my 'fit' changed over the last year, and my original first gun no longer 'fits' me anymore (and I'm selling it!).

What sort of shooting do you want to do? If it's clay, you can likely find a second hand Miroku or the like -- it'll be an excellent gun for well under 1K; but there are many other options. Try to find a gun that /does/ fit you as best as you can tho:
+ Mount to the shoulder with your eyes closed
+ 'settle' it nicely to the shoulder, still eyes closed
+ Make sure your head is down on the stock -- not too much, but nicely set.
+ Remember to lean a bit forward, like 60/40 on the front foot.
+ Open your eye(s) --
You should see a little bit over the rib, and in line with the rib.

If you are 'under' the rib, the gun is not for you. If you are over but out of line left/right (significantly) the gun is not for you. If you are WAY over; same.

If you see 'flat' or reasonable amount of rib, you are nearly there...

If the rib has two 'dots' a general rule is that seeing a 'figure of eight' with the mid dot under, and the further dot over it is the 'ideal' gun sight....

Also make sure the stock isn't too short/long, and that your finger *tip* is on the trigger when you hold the gun.

Oh, for some reason I thought you were my FEO based on this:

How did you know he told me to get a large gun cabinet?

I'm a member at Atkin Grant and Lang near St Albans and they've got a well stocked gun room. I also get to rent their guns for free so I'll be sure to try out a few once my license pops through the post. I've been using my mates guns up until now.

Thanks for the tips on what a 'fitted gun' actually means. That will be very useful :)

Ah, AGL is a very nice ground actually, we go there fairly often -- altho more on week-ends as the M25 is a BE*TCH -- they do have a nice gun room, but DO look around before buying -- last time I looked, they were a bit on the expensive side of things!
They have a gorgeous hammer gun in there with damascus barrels I've been drooling over a little bit :-)

Went to AGL a couple weeks ago and their 'grouse' stand was AWESOME -- like 6 traps, all harder than each others, a great laugh!

Bought some already, and yes a bit more than £1 (£29 a box fo 25!) -- 28g No6's. but at least I got paper cases.

BUT, they make a loud bang a a lot of smoke for that price, it's bound to be fun! :-)

Two of mine: On the right is my Beretta 690 III Sporter O/U with a stunning piece of timber, on the left is some old Winchester pump action thing that cost me a BLT sandwich (no, seriously). Guess which one I shoot better with?

Have also got a Browning Gold semi-auto which hasn't left the cabinet in at least a year, going to get that on guntrader in the new year at a rather cheap price and hopefully it will free up some space in the cabinet.

Anyone here been to the West London Shooting School over by RAF Northolt? Live not far away and tempted to pay it a visit but as a newbie to shotguns I want to make sure I can get a good intro session and then onto some clays hopefully!

I know there's also the Holland & Holland ground up near Northwood which I could visit at some point if that's any good!

Some really nice gear you chaps have - like very nice!

I'll be in the market for a shooter as soon as my SGC gets approved (assuming it does )
I may be interested ;)

Once your SGC comes through send me an email through trust and we can talk. It's a good gun and I'd much rather it went to an acquaintance than a stranger from Gun Trader :)

Went to shoot some clays on xmas eve. I got my best score to date, 56%. This was trying out the club's silver pigeon for the first time. Not 100% convinced the fit is okay. I need to try it out again and a few others guns that they have available. I quite like the look of the Browning B525 and it's at a similar price range to the Beretta.

With regards to my shooting, I think if I can get over 50% then it proves I can hit the clays, I just need to up my consistency.

Question with regards to fixing the gun safe to the wall. It's in an upstairs spare room but to fasten it flush to the wall would mean either lifting it up 170mm off the floor so it sits just above the skirting or to remove the two lengths of skirting so it sits against the wall and the floor.

What do you reckon?
