ity;s not 400 years though is it it;s 70. And if he was American he may well have been charged with treason, and depending on the sate be facing death.

I didn't say it was 400 years, im saying those kind of sentences in america have been dished out.

Too many people in this thread shouting for extradition without knowing diddly squat about the case. If only it were all black and white what a wonderful world it would be.

Your link is two years old, and there is nothing in it which even vaguely supports McKinnon's case.

He broke the law, he knew he was breaking the law, and now he is facing the consequences of his actions. There is no earthly reason why he should be allowed to walk away from his crimes.

Extradite him and get the whole thing over with asap.

I know it is two years old. Like I already said, I've been following his case since it went public. I posted a link to that article because despite being two years old and much more information being easily available to peruse, people where rabbiting on about him being some sort of super hacker when, by his own admission and explanation, the method used was incredibly simple and it relied on the ineptitude of administrators and users not locking down their systems by failing to have passwords on user accounts.

I think a lot of people should go to http://www.freegary.org.uk and do some reading beyond what they read in the papers. I also think that anyone who would extradite a British citizen to a country that detains people without charge in Guantanamo Bay and Eastern European countries and where they practice torture in the name of a "war on terror" is a muppet.

If some guy can break into the US's most top secret computers, they should offer him a job of making adequate protection, not locking him up.

kid should be given a job... 70 (:/) years in jail is a waste of talent.

and thats completely different :/

100% yes, but id put all the criminals in a special unit, and send them all in first, perhaps they will do more than get themselves killed?

who cares either way, they can be used as a distraction

indeed, although mabye they will fake his death so its uber secret

And when some of them manage to flee/escape the battlefield, and you have hardened criminals at large, handily supplied with heavy weaponry?

EDIT: Oh its you, I might have guessed.

70 years is a lot, but frankly he should face trial in the US and serve his time there too. Ignorance isn't an excuse, he knew what he was doing at the time.

This whole situation seems to remind me of Kevin Mitnick for some reason.

He broke the law, end of story surely?

No because he broke uk law in the uk, not american law in america. Therefore he should be tried in the uk, he was looking at a community order before this whole american fiasco started.

they cant escape, dont be silly, and they dont have heavy weaponry, just LMG's and rifles for tanks or other heavy armour they would have to call it in..

aside from prevention, most of them wouldnt dare try to escape, even if they could..

although i have no idea why i was refering to a military unit made of criminals, so my bad, i guess i drank a few and only read a bit and jumped up and down

Hes a gifted bloke who showed how easy it was to hack into the secure networks of the world...

If anything the government should cover up the story and hire him!

Why make an example of him in the public... bonkers to me...

oh noessssss not 11 computers broken... its the credit crunch how will they buy new ones?

Pfft you want to do it Vietnam style, have all the criminals stand in the front row and before the battle cut their own heads off.

For either side that had to be pretty ****ing disturbing.

Apparently he did it badly, and still didn't get anything as well as being caught.

We've already got better no need for him. If there was merit you can bet that would have already happened.

The Guy is Autistic and i can see where he is coming from all he did was feeding his curisosity/paranoia about ufos etc and without realising got in too deep
if he goes to prision he will not be able to handle it mentally beacuse its a social autism
yes hacking is hacking and its a crime but you are all condemning him and saying yeah he should go to jail without looking at the facts about aspergers
