As far as I can tell nobody knows what it's counting. I've seen other mouse mileage counters and you always had to specify your monitor's measurements. In this I think it's just making up figures based on a standard size. It might be as sophistocated as assuming things like 1280x1024=17", 1024x768=15". However, it could just as easily be assuming we're all using 17" screens.
