Show us your kitty cats

Luna will only chase a piece of string I wave around or a ball of tin foil (about the size of a large marble). She's not at all interested in the laser, ping-pong balls, things with bells, cat-nip or boxes :/ I think she may be from the same litter as yours :p

Must be. The piece of string is Bella's choice as well :p Although she will only chase it around her tunnel. Anywhere else, not interested. And in fact she will just grab it and bring it back to the tunnel :p Sooo fussy :p

So something that I didnt know, but is apparently true, cats watch their pry/toy for patterns.

For example: my cat Snoopy was managing to catch bats a few years ago, and we were stumped to know how. The conservation guy - who came to examine and re-release the bats (she never killed them and brought them home) - told us that cats watch the pattern/order of the bats flying out of the roost.

So 6 bats would fly out first, then a gap, then the next 6 and so on. Snoopy had found a spot above or below the roost exit and was (effectively) counting the bats and she would catch the first bat of the 2nd or 3rd set of 6! :o

This applies to play time too. Try not to go all erratic with the toy (fast, then slow etc) make a pattern to your movements! She will watch and then jump when she is sure that she will catch it :)

Have you got one of these? My 2 both love this in different ways. Peanut gets some serious air when trying to catch it!

This doesn't seem to apply to laser pens tho :D

Edit: have you tried rolled up receipts? Peanut loves chasing them and bringing them back to me in his mouth! Also, wrapping paper...a screwed up ball and thrown at Snoopy and she will catch it and rip it into strips :) Kept her out of my way when doing the Christmas wrapping, but I seemed to use a lot of paper this year ;) :D

Interesting stuff. I'd tried mixing it up as I thought maybe she was getting bored.

Yes I've got one of those, only mine is called the Flying Frenzy (it looks exactly the same.) She went ape for it for the first two days I brought it to her. Then nothing. Now I can wave it around all day and she'll ignore it.

Also she used to play fetch with the little soft foam balls. She would only chase them if you threw them out of sight, like round a corner or down the stairs. If she can see the ball the whole time she won't react at all.

And when she does chase after it a little, as it slows down and stops she seems to get frustrated. She will violently scratch the carpet wherever she happens to be standing, then walk away. So in other words she moves towards the ball, but doesn't get to it before it stops bouncing, then gets upset (I think). Proper weird.

But before she would run up and down the stairs and bring the balls back to me. Not a chance now :p It's the string round the tunnel or it's nothing at all :p

Yet another toy suggestion, based on own experience... Our girl is obsessed with these. Not interested in anything else at all and would spend the entire day chasing it, dropping it on your lap and meowing at you until you threw it again for her, unless we pocket it and hide it from her to calm down. Even then she's on edge looking for it.

What are those...Tribbles?

Shiny craft pom poms. You can get packets of them for a few £. She likes the gold ones best, I think because they're like little furry animals. Yep, they're like crack to her, always finding them marooned under the sofa :D

This is Bebop, a rescue we got when she was found abandoned at three weeks old:

Unfortunately I just had a call to say one of the family cats had to be put down early this morning. He'd been struggling with a suspected virus since the weekend and went downhill really fast overnight.

14 years is a pretty good innings but gutted isn't the word.

night skinny jim..

Hey people I am having major issues with my cat eating. I never know from one day to the next whether what I put down to her is going to be to her liking. I admit this is probably my fault as I have spoilt her but now it is getting silly.

What she will wolf down one day she will not look at the next and she will just not eat. This morning (early) I put down some more of what she had last night and she turned her nose up at it. Now she can afford to lose a few grams as she is a little over weight but starving herself is not a good diet.

I have just cooked a bit of white fish and when it was cool gave it to her, so nothing wrong with her appetite. But tomorrow she might well refuse the fish.

I don't think I need to consult a vet on this matter but am looking for any help or suggestions.

Damn sorry to hear that. Not a good day for cats.. One of ours was killed by a car last night. One of the neighbours knocked on the door about 11pm and said she'd heard a cat get hit and it looked like one of ours. Went out and poor Maude was laying in the road already dead.

Me and the missus are gutted and annoyingly we were thinking about leaving her with my parents when we went down to visit over Christmas. She's the friendliest of our cats but she was getting bullied by the other two and weeing on the floor because of the stress. She loved it at my parents house and they were desperate to keep her but we thought we'd give her another couple months and try and sort her stress out at our house. Wish we'd left her with them now!

I've had this issue with my fat lad as well - he seems to go through cycles of eating food for weeks and then suddenly turning his nose up at it.
Difficult though it is you just have to be strong about it, if the cat ate it before they will eat it again if they are hungry enough; obviously if the cat is refusing to eat anything at all for over a day then a trip to the vet is in order.

In terms of them just deciding they don't fancy something, it's just a case of them knowing (through learned behaviour - I'm guilty of it too) that they may get something 'better' instead, in this case a lovely bit of fish!

This has to be my favourite thread. Here are some more. Seb won't be particularly happy that I posted the last one.

This is my favourite. Button's taking a liking to my parents' Christmas present (the Raijintek Metis). It vents it's warm air through the PSU at the bottom and he picked up on it pretty much straight away. We have to put things there to stop him sleeping there.

That sounds pretty sensible, thanks.

If you try and over-feed a human what do you think will happen? He will decline eating more food. Correct?

She is a little overweight, she can afford to lose a little weight and as such she is not hungry.

If she becomes bony (under weight) AND is not eating, this is the time you need to start worrying. In your case, there is nothing to worry about.

Addendum
I know some pet owners want to spoil their pets, but I assure you, they are not doing their pets any favours by keeping them overweight. Only yesterday I was watching a program on overweight dogs. The vets were really stressing to dog owners that over feeding an animal is not a good idea. They even had a human being wearing saddle bags and go on a treadmill to demonstrate how damaging it is to have a fat pet. When you have a fat pet, you are essentially shortening its life-span.
