Show us your kitty cats

I have just had a 'pet door' fitted. Has anyone got any tips on training the cats to use it? Apart from shoving them through both ways.

Myself and the missus stood on either side of the door and the person on the other side of the door called the cat for treats.

After a few goes of the cat going back and forth, they got the idea.

I found that sellotaping the flap up to start with helped.

Trip to the vets in the morning then! My Samson seems to have hurt his back leg. It hurts him if I touch his paw, and also the very top of his leg, the shoulder blade kinda thing.

He's feeling a bit sorry for himself! There's no sign of any cuts or blood, I think he may have fallen from a height, he's a big boy! He's limping around but he does put weight on it, so I am hoping that it isn't broken. Luckily I still have a litter tray which means I can lock him inside, and he wont have to struggle with getting out of the cat flap to do his business in the night.

Took Whiskey outside, around the garden using a harness and extendable lead yesterday evening :D. His nose must be sore from the amount he was sniffing.

Here is the filthy mess they left the cat to stay in. You can just about see the black bin bags that the cat was trying to get shelter by climbing into when the cold weather was with us last week.

Finally got her in the cat carrier, she didn't like it but whos cat does? She was in the carrier for a little over 3 mins as I live close by.

Having a nosey in her new home, be it temp or permanent. At least she's out of the cold and into a home with shelter, food and drink.

A sunday roast tray is all I could manage to get for a litter tray but it's something that works.

Hoping she'll settle and at least she has used the litter tray already. I've got to make sure her and my own cat Jinx don't start to fight. Have to introduce them slowly.

As of now Jinx is in the kitchen smelling the new cat smells through a gap in the door. I'll let them do this for another 24-48 hours then see how they get on being fed close to each other that they can see each other.

Next stop will be the vets to get her wormed, spayed and anything else that needs done.

If you want to help out then every little helps https://life.indiegogo.com/fundraisers/saving-an-abandoned-cat/x/9853274

Good job stubbytna!

I would, however, give them a little more than 48 hours to get used to the situation. Typically you would keep the new one in one room for at least a week before allowing a time-share in a separate room i.e. keep the existing cat out of the way and let the new one roam some more rooms for a bit to smell smells and the like before shutting it away again and letting the existing one back out to do the same. Once they're both aware of the others permanent existence then it's time for introductions through a barely opened door (enough to see through but not quite enough to get a paw through).

Does your cat go out subbytna, if so its likely they might already "know" of each other anyway. You might find they aren't that difficult to settle together.

Ive read many stories like this and I dont agree with them.
If the cats are well balanced they should be able to get on within hours.

My cats are well balanced, so I've never had problems when it comes to introducing them.

When I get a new cat in the house, I left them out in the bathroom. Door closed for 30 minutes. Then I open the door. If/when they want to come out, they are free to do so. I dont force it.

Obviously every situation needs to be assessed on its own merit, but I just dont believe in this 7 days to introduce cats and introduce them gradually.

Within 24 hours (of being first introduced):

And before you say, well, the 2 cats above are an isolated case...5 years earlier, this photo was taken:

If the cats are balanced, and the cats are confident in your ability to control the situation, they will get along just fine. If the cats have no confidence in themselves or you (the owner), then you might have to go through the pullava of having half open doors, etc.

Nice work chap! :)

Jaysus, who leaves litter, and so much of it, beside their house though? That's disgusting!

Who do you guys use for pet insurance? There's so many choices!

The most recommended is definitely Pet plan. It's an insurance company specifically for pets, so to me it's a no brainer, they seem to actually give a damn about your pet and their customer service has been great.

No I am 2-3 mins away by car, zero chance they would have met before. I'm trying to get the wife to agree for the cat to stay but if it isn't to be then I will rehome her or get Cats Protection Belfast to help rehome her. Just trying to sort out a vet and get the usual stuff done.

Feels good to get the cat in my place so I know it's safe and warm and well fed. Karma has given me the nice warm fuzzies :D
