Show us your kitty cats

Dave, still sits in the sink :D

Lola, sunbathing earlier :)

Bruce, now 16 weeks, and still very cute.

Finally managed to get them all in the same picture earlier. They're still not all the best of friends, but it's slowly getting there. Bruce is a confident little sod which helps I'm sure :D

Which cat food do you feed your cats? Two different vets have suggested to me that Royal Canin or James Wellbeloved are best, but they're both fairly expensive. I know Whiskas and Felix aren't the best either nutritionally or in terms of when a cat visits the litter tray, so is their a middle ground?

Natures menu, or Asdas feline fayre are both good quality high meat/fish content foods, that don't break the bank. I don't mind forking out a few quid extra if it means they get something better than Whiskas/Felix :)

Lonewolf, there are plenty of good brands out there.
The main thing is to go for something with high meat content.
In general, the higher the meat percentage, the more expensive the food.
Many people also prefer to use raw meat (like me).

I feed mine a combination of Whiskas in jelly + raw beef. I mix the 2, ratio: 60:40.
For dry food: Applaws.

As Knip said, Asda do some tuna pouches/cans at a very good rate. You should also check out Wilkos - they also sell tuna pouches at a good price.

I also remember reading in this thread about a cat owner whose cat was still alive at around 20 years of age. I asked what he feeds his cat. He said mainly tuna - just normal tuna you buy in a can.

A common question with many subjective answers :)

My answer:

Mine get raw meat and nothing else. I buy in bulk, beef steaks and then bag fulls of chicken breast off cuts from the butcher. I know this chicken has been handled well from the local farmer, as opposed to mass produced factory chicken that poses risk of infection. He charges me a pittance because he'd only throw it in the bin if I didn't buy it.

Added to this raw meat are the occasional meaty bones to gnaw on and then a supplement for the meat that boosts taurine and essential vitamin levels. I tried to incorporate raw heart and liver into their diets to obtain those important dietary requirements but our girl doesn't agree with liver especially so I opt to supplement instead.

The result of feeding them like this for over a year now are healthy coats, nice smelling breath and white teeth, plus their poop isn't hideously disgusting to smell. Everyone comments on their coats being soft and shiny. They also get plenty of hydration through the meat, as opposed to the complications that may arise with liver and kidneys via a life long dry food diet.

I wouldn't touch whiskas or felix. That stuff... Well you may as well try bringing them up on McDonald's for life.

Again, this is all opinion. Every cat owner knows better ;)

Based on some of your feedback I went for a nosey today. Asda had no Feline Fayre, but B&M's did although the food doesn't appear to be for kittens. So, in the end I picked up some heart which I'll mix in with some dry. :)

Good kitten food, applaws, natures menu, james well beloved, or Lily's kitchen.

You're right feline fayre don't do a kitten food sadly :)

I tried Bella on a couple of the high meat content brands from Zooplus. She really didn't go for them, and a lot of it was wasted. Atm, she'll pretty much only eat Felix AGAIL Doubly Delicious :p Apart from human food from my plate, that is :p Just tonight she helped me eat some cod as she could plainly see I had too much on my plate :p

I really would like to get her onto the higher meat content brands, since even the AGAIL DD is only 8% of the meat/fish ingredient of the specified flavour. I assume that the meat content is higher than that, but that it's generic meat and meat by-products, probably chicken, regardless of flavour.

Kitty :)

This made my heart melt. Dave and Lola, with Bruce looking up wistfully at them, wondering when he can get up there to join them :D

I need some advice on cat ownership!
My girlfriend and I are thinking about adopting a cat, we went down to a local shelter on Saturday to see if there was one we liked.

We found a really nice five year old pair that need to be homed together,
but we hadn't really thought about getting two cats!

Is having two cats twice the cost and responsibility? will they share things like toys and litter trays?

I am quite keen on the idea but my girlfriend has a few reservations about two cats!
